John Kasich

Would much rather see Mitch Daniels or Huntsman run, but that's not going to happen. Agree that Kasich is the GOP's next best option. Walker is a total donk. Kasich served in the House, so he doesn't need a VP with congressional ties like Walker will. Kasich could go with someone like Susanna Martinez who would be a good electoral and governing choice. Don't like or trust Mike Pence on social issues, but he'd also be a better pick than Walker.

if only we could reanimate Barry Goldwater

we'd be gold, jerry! GOLD! (get it?)

Whatever chance Mike Pence had of going anywhere beyond Gov of Indiana was ruined today vs Stephanopolis on ABC. He simply continued to refuse to answer any questions and looked like a total child/boob doing it.

Thought that Kasich, Pence, or Jindal would be better alternatives to Walker. Jindal's deliberately been pandering for awhile. Pence made a huge blunder and looked like an asshole. Kasich still had a chance.

Thought North Carolina was the safe in the clubhouse leader for last desperate state to embarrass itself before marriage equality. Thank God for Roy Moore and Alabama and Pence and Indiana.

As someone living in Ohio, it's hilarious that John Kasich is being mentioned as a Presidential candidate. He ain't that smart. He totes the GOP line and he's more fiscally conservative than socially. But sweet baby Jesus, he ain't that smart.

Point well taken. Jindal and Cruz are academically accomplished, but say and do a lot of stupid things they can't possibly believe. That's way more dangerous than being stupid. Pence fucked up, but still think he's brighter than Walker. Certainly not sold on O'Malley or Webb as alternatives to HRC, but I would like to evaluate Kasich relative to Jeb and Walker.

O'Malley and Webb would be useful as flamethrowers in a primary, but far from ideal as a Not Hillary.

Agreed. GOP polling for Not Jeb seems about right, but HRC polling seems way off. Almost every Dem I know is extremely wary of Hillary and most prefer some form of Not Hillary.

Most people I know up here (Massachusetts - so liberal heaven) either support Clinton pretty hard core or think she's too conservative and want Warren. Not a great barometer for the national stage but a bit of an anecdotal contrast from Rube.

The fact that Kasich has reached across the aisle to work with Democrats means he doesn't pass the purity test for the tea baggers even though his state is currently running a budget surplus and its economy has moved into high gear. Normally this would have you leading everyone as he is a current executive of a big state. Walker is such a douchebag compared to this guy.

High gear might be a bit of a overstatement. And also one of the ways that the state budget is now suddenly running a surplus under his leadership is because he eliminated the local fund as a part of the state budget. The local fund was a significant portion of the state budget that was sent back to cities to help pay for local services, i.e. cops, firefighters, etc. That has forced cities to either raise taxes or reduce their staffs to support these services.
