Welcome to the reenactment of Julius Caesar, where history may change but death will remain ever the constant.
Julius Caesar has just returned triumphant from war. The victory is marked by public games (these). Fellow senators, Caius Cassius and Marcus Brutus (among others), are suspicious of Caesar’s reactions to the power he now holds in the Republic. They fear he will accept offers to become Emperor of the People of Rome. Cassius, a successful general himself, is driven by jealousy, while Brutus has a more balanced view and only considers taking action that is the best course of action for Rome.
On the 15th of March (i.e., what is now known as the Ides of March) Caesar is urged not to go to the Senate by his wife, Calpurnia, who has had dreams that he will be murdered, and she fears the portents of the overnight storms (oh how fitting).
That is where we stand today. The citizenry adores Caesar to a possibly unhealthy extent, while men of power have both political machinations and the good of Rome on their minds. Who will win out? We shall see.
Rome as it stands (note this is an open game):
Independent
Caesar – A great Roman general and senator, recently returned to Rome in triumph after a successful military campaign. He is unable to separate his public life from his private life, and, seduced by the populace’s increasing idealization and idolization of his image, he ignores ill omens and threats against his life, believing himself as eternal as the North Star. Caesar starts with the following powers this game:
1) Each night he may choose to receive the results of the Soothsayer (cop) or make a vig hit
2) Each night he may choose to send a message to another player (by way of Jupiter, me, the Mod) in the game that states “[Player name] is Julius Caesar" in an attempt to win the citizenry’s adulation
Note: Caesar cannot be roleblocked while Indy.
If Caesar gets killed, Caesar will be able to write a will, where he may give out up to three 1 shot powers to whomever he pleases. The powers must be given to different players. The powers are: 1-shot tracker, 1-shot jail keeper, and 1-shot governor. They may be given to civs or mafia.
Caesar’s win condition at the start of the game is to outlive Brutus (mafia) and Cassius (mafia) and therefore he is not inherently a hostile Indy. If Caesar outlives them, Caesar’s win condition is fulfilled, and he exits the game a champion. Following the story though, the ghost of Caesar may still post during both day and night phases in the thread if he chooses, though he cannot influence the game in any way.
If in the event that Antony finds Caesar (see Antony’s role below), Caesar is given the option to wear the crown and take full power of the civs. If Caesar chooses to do so, Caesar becomes a civ, all living civs are stripped of their powers, and those powers are transferred to Caesar (i.e., Caesar becomes a cop, a bodyguard, a 1-shot commuter if Octavius has not used the power), and Caesar is free to give out the three one shot powers mentioned above if he so chooses. If Caesar becomes Emperor, he loses his option to vig/get cop results, and his win condition changes to that of the civs.
Mafia
Cassius - A talented general and longtime acquaintance of Caesar, Cassius dislikes the fact that Caesar has become godlike in the eyes of the Romans. He slyly leads Brutus to believe that Caesar has become too powerful and must die, finally converting Brutus to his cause by sending him forged letters claiming that the Roman people support the death of Caesar. Being the cunning liar he is, Cassius has the power to frame one player each night. The framed player will appear guilty to alignment investigations, and will appear active to trackers.
Casca - A public figure opposed to Caesar’s rise to power, Casca relates to Cassius and Brutus how Antony offered the crown to Caesar three times and how each time Caesar declined it. However, Casca was the most eager to kill Caesar in the story and is a pretty aggressive dude. He therefore has the stones to be the mafia roleblocker. Players are only notified of being roleblocked if necessary in the course of the night’s events.
Decius - A member of the conspiracy, Decius convinces Caesar that Calpurnia misinterpreted her dire nightmares and that, in fact, no danger awaits him at the Senate. Decius convinces Caesar to attend the Senate the day that Caesar is assassinated knowing full well that Caesar goes to his death. Each night Decius may call on Caesar to come to the Senate by choosing a player to see if they are Caesar. If Decius finds Caesar, Caesar dies.
Brutus - A supporter of the republic who believes strongly in a government guided by the votes of senators. While Brutus loves Caesar as a friend, he opposes the ascension of any single man to the position of dictator, and he fears that Caesar aspires to such power. While the other conspirators act out of envy and rivalry, only Brutus truly believes that Caesar’s death will benefit Rome. Brutus begins the game outside of the mafia chatzy and the rest of the mafia do not know which player Brutus is. Brutus however knows who his teammates are, and he also knows the identity of Julius Caesar.
Being the noblest man in Rome, he also appears innocent with regards to investigations. Brutus joins the mafia chatzy if Caesar is killed, where after he will be able to make one ninja kill (an augmented factional kill that cannot be seen by a watcher or tracker). Brutus’s worry regarding the consolidation of power increases as the game goes on if Caesar does not die early, therefore he will earn a vig hit if he and Caesar are still alive on n3, however he cannot use it on Caesar. The hit may be pocketed. If in the event that Brutus has not been able to join the chatzy at all, but is the only mafia member left alive, Brutus may then make night kills and also use his 1-shot augmented ninja kill.
Civs
Soothsayer - This is the guy who famously and cryptically warns Caesar to "beware the Ides of March". The "Ides of March" refers to March 15, the day Julius Caesar was assassinated by the Roman conspirators. Even though he gets to speak the coolest line in the play, nobody pays any attention to the soothsayer. Hopefully it doesn’t work that way this game, in which the Soothsayer starts as the civ cop who will receive results as “Town” or “Anti-Town”. If Caesar dies, the Soothsayer becomes just a watcher as he must watch the world, which did not heed his warnings, burn.
Calpurnia - Caesar’s wife, Calpurnia invests great authority in omens and portents. She warns Caesar against going to the Senate on the Ides of March, since she has had terrible nightmares and heard reports of many bad omens. This game, Calpurnia will start as the normal bodyguard until Caesar dies, at which point she will become a weak bodyguard who will die in the stead of her target, but will not kill the killer like a normal bodyguard.
Octavius - Caesar’s adopted son and appointed successor. Octavius, who had been traveling abroad, does not return to Rome until after Caesar’s death; he then joins with Antony and sets off to fight the conspirators. Antony tries to control Octavius’s movements, but Octavius follows his adopted father’s example and emerges as a badass cold blooded killer. Following this arc, Octavius starts the game with a 1-shot commuting power. Once at night Octavius may choose to commute outside of Rome whereupon all night actions taken against Octavius will fail, including hits. Upon Caesars death, Octavius loses his ability to commute away from the tumult, and becomes a full vig with vengeance on his mind.
Antony - A friend of Caesar, Antony offers the crown of Rome to Caesar but Caesar denies it thrice. After Caesar dies, when speaking a funeral oration over Caesar’s body, he spectacularly persuades the audience to withdraw its support of Brutus and instead condemn him as a traitor. With tears on his cheeks and Caesar’s will in his hand, Antony engages masterful rhetoric to stir the crowd to revolt against the conspirators. This game, Antony is searching for Caesar to try to convince him to take power of the civs. Each night Anthony may submit a player name to try to find Caesar. If Antony finds Caesar, Caesar is given the option to rewrite history and take the crown. See Caesar’s role for the effects of taking the crown.
