Last night we saw two instances where the head coaches "went by the book" In one case it cost them the win in the other it almost cost the other guy the win. First, we have the ball down 3 with about 5 minutes to go in the game. Instead of keeping the peddle to metal and eating their dbs alive we go to a slow developing and running game. "The book" says we need to run the clock so that we don't give them too much time to score. The problem here is that we don't make first downs and we end up having to give them ball anyway and with plenty of time left on the clock. Result they score. Now a little bit later they get the ball back and do the same thing we did-- run the clock-- abandon the pass and get stuffed and turn the ball over to us. Now we only have 2 minutes and no time outs so we have to be aggressive and in two plays get the ball to the one and in spite of the staff being hard headed with the play calls finally score and win the game. Both coaches were burned by abandoning what had worked all game to try and milk the clock and play it safe, that is what "the book" says-- Forget the book stay with your strength and try to win the game
