In making this distinction, which do you think is better ?

In general, certainly the former. Contingent faculty don't have job security, benefits, or time and funding to do the kind of research necessary to grab tenure line jobs down the line.

Visiting faculty used to be just that: visiting, teaching for a year or two to broaden their own experience. One I had was a French professor who was visiting from a university in, of all places, France. What a concept! Have someone native fluent in a language teach the language.

It looks like Rogan Kersh is paid a lot of money until you realize that's only a year of tuition from about 14 students.
