Umm...physicians order and/or perform tons of unnecessary tests, prescribe tons of unnecessary medications, perform plenty of unnecessary surgery, and generally contribute greatly to the overuse of our medical resources.

And they do this for a variety of reasons, including some related to their own enrichment and (perceived) self-protection, some related to patient desires/demands/expectations, and some for semi-noble reasons.

POS REP. A good example of the meds over-prescribing might be insomnia and depression meds. People definitely need them, probably not as many as are billing Medicare/Medicaid.
 
Drugs are mis- and over-prescribed all the time (those listed being a good example). Part of it the fact many won't leave the doctor's office until the doctor gives them something. People aren't satisfied with "you don't need any medicine."
