4440 N. Cherry Street at the Weaver fertilizer plant. Due to a couple large ammonium nitrate tanks and a lack of water to adequately cool them, command has requested all units abandon equipment and pull back in a 1 mile radius. Not a good night nor fire to be on.

My parents live about 2 miles away, I just told them they didn’t even know!

an "abandon equipment" order sounds scary as fuck
At that point, losing millions of dollars worth of equipment and apparatus is no longer a concern. Just get everyone out alive. It doesn't get called often.

Ammonium nitrate is often used in making bombs. Timothy McVeigh used two tons of it in the Oklahoma City Bombing. I'm not sure how much Weaver has on site, but I feel certain it's many times that. Regardless, they have enough to require a mile radius evacuation based upon the pre-plans.

Why is such a dangerous facility so close to a residential area?
The plant has been there for many, many years. Not sure if it pre-dates the residual areas, but I wouldn't be surprised. We were discussing it at our FD meeting, and many of the old timers remember their parents getting fertilizer from the Weavers.

You'd be amazed at the chemicals that are found at any of the industrial companies dotting the landscape. They're required to update the FD annually with manifests of what's on the property just for events like this.

"The Winston-Salem plant was built in 1939 and opened for business in January of 1940"

“Because of a fire at 4440 N. Cherry Street, the Winston-Salem Fire Department is asking for voluntary evacuations by residents within a one-mile radius of that address. That includes off-campus housing north of Polo Road between Cherry Street and Long Drive. (See image of one-mile radius.) On-campus housing is not included in the evacuation.

Any faculty, staff or students in the area who can evacuate should do so. If possible, stay with friends or family who are outside the one-mile radius. The University is currently working on long-term plans for those who do not have an alternative place to go, and those plans will be communicated as soon as possible.

Campus buildings that are currently open include the Wellbeing Center, Benson University Center and ZSR Library. You may wish to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, and/or blanket to be comfortable if the evacuation lasts more than a short time. You may consider taking necessary personal belongings needed for several hours should the evacuation remain in place.

Motorists are also advised to avoid driving in this area.

Students on campus or living outside of the one-mile radius are encouraged to stay indoors and keep their windows closed.

The best source of information about the fire is the official Twitter page for the Winston-Salem Fire Department: @cityofwsfire.”

They said they is 10x as much ammonium nitrate at Weaver as the recent West Texas one om 2013.

Isn't ammonium nitrate what leveled half that town near Waco several years ago? West Texas I believe? And wasn't it what caused that huge explosion in Beirut a year or so ago? Hopefully there is no explosion at this plant in W-S.

That one mile radius is scary.
