More Europe travel assistance

I'm going to be spending the next week in Vienna, Austria. Any "don't miss this" places to visit and/or restaurant recommendations?

Send me a PM - I'll help you out. Where in the city are you staying and do you have any free time during the day?

The "don't miss" tourist sights are ... palaces and museums. There are tons of them, they are cool.

However, with nice weather like we have right now - Wien is an outdoors city. Go to Prater park and wander around, go to the Donau Insel and dip your feet into the Danube and have a few drinks, take the #38 street tram to the north side of the city and Grinzing ... take the bus from there to the top of Kahlenberg where you can see the whole city and then walk down through the vineyards stopping in at the various heurigers and drink their wine. Wherever you go, grab a bottle of wine and take it with you.

As far as tourist spots you might not get highlighted in a guide book - Karl Marx Hof was highlighted by The Guardian in their "History of Cities in 50 buildings" ... built in the 20s as a Socialist ideal, it became the location of most of the fighting in the Austrian Civil War. You can also visit the crypt where the Habsburg emperors and their families are buried in super ornate caskets, it's called the Kaisergruft.

Also - go out at night along the Donaukanal ... the pop-up bars lining it (especially the east side, starting around Schwedenplatz and heading north to about the Schottenring u-bahn entrance) are Vienna's relaxing nightlife during the summer. The sun stays out until 9pm right now, and even after it goes down the bars and cafes down next to the canal will be busy until well after midnight.
