Admittedly random, but I am fascinated by destructive weather. Stuck in bed with strep throat, so I am reading a book on NC hurricanes. (Barnes, Jay. NC Hurricane History, 4th Ed.)
Hurricane Hazel stories can't be real:
- came ashore as a Cat 4 at high tide in October (seems late to me).
- on Long Beach, 5(!) Of 357 buildings left standing.
- no piers left standing over a span of 170 miles.
- killed people in six different states.
- NWS report says "all signs of civilization" at landfall were "erased."
- set 113 mph wind gusts in Manhattan (still the record).
- Still intact after it crossed the Arctic Circle.
Would love to hear any stories (probably hand-me-downs) from Coastal Deacs about this storm, but a broader thread about violent storms would be more useful.
Post your destruction porn here.
