NCAA Tournament Discussion Thread - One Shining Moment - UConn Huskies

Not sure what conference the officials normally work in the State v. Duke game last night, but when the Blade Runner fouled out around the 5 min mark, I knew they were not ACC officials.
  • Referees:
  • Michael Irving
  • Brian O'Connell
  • Doug Sirmons
Both O'Connell and Sirmons do a fair number of ACC games. Sirmons worked the UConn/Miami Final Four game last year, his 6th straight Final Four. Michael Irving appears to be mainly a Pac-12 official, not as familiar with his name. Upon googling, this was one of the first stories that popped up where his name was mentioned:

FYI, in case anyone is interested, these were the 40 officials named to this past weekend's Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games by the NCAA Men's Basketball committee:

Most State fans I know can’t believe it either, and also know that realistically it could just as easily take another 30 years to make it back as it might take 3; probably much more likely the former. We bust on State fans for having an unrealistic view of their athletics, but for the most part they consider themselves as snakebit as we do in living up to expectations . Their #ncstateshit is our LOWF.

Oh no another whole 30 years ?!?

Mark Few was in the womb when the Deacs last went to the Final Four. Kevin Keatts was born 10 years after we last went, but sure let's hear more about how hard State fans have had it.

very good post

add jay wright to the list of guys that couldn't until they could

mark few is still kinda suspended in that territory
Kinda. Eight straight Elite Eights kinda isolates you from criticism.

What gets me is Pilch will post all that about how coaching doesn't matter as much as we think, but he'd be just as pissed as anybody else if Forbes won a championship and Wake just let him go to get another guy because "Talent, luck, cohesion, injuries, draw, shooting variance... all create a randomness that even the best coaches can't overcome and weaker coaches can ride to success."

I’m pretty sure Pilch is not saying that coaching doesn’t matter

he’s saying the tournament alone is not a great tool for assessing coaching and that a single-elimination tournament probably overrates the weight of coaching in the ultimate outcome

Right. Because coaching doesn't matter as much as we think in the tournament alone because other factors like "Talent, luck, cohesion, injuries, draw, shooting variance... all create a randomness that even the best coaches can't overcome and weaker coaches can ride to success."

There is a big difference between saying "coaching doesn't matter" and saying whether a team get bounced early in the tournament means that "a coach sucks or can't get it done". Danny Hurley is an example of that. He had two bad first round losses and now has won 10 straight NCAAT games.

Some perspective... Since Wake's last EE appearance in 1996, the following ACC teams have at least one

Natty - UNC, Duke, UVA, Syracuse, Louisville
Natty appearance - Georgia Tech
FF - NCSU, Miami
EE - ND (15 and 16), Pitt (09), FSU (18), Clemson (24)

Only Virginia Tech and BC have no EE or better appearances to show during that time frame.

Good stuff. Just to pile on, while VT and BC haven't been to the EE since WF's last appearance:

The Hokies have been the NCAAT five times since 2017, including a Sweet 16 in 2019. VT also won the ACCT in 2022 (WF hasn't made an ACCT semifinal since 2006).

BC, and BC is in class by itself because BC is the only ACC school where basketball isn't the priority winter sport (and the 2nd most important sport at the school), hockey is the priority over basketball, BC last made a Sweet 16 in 2006 (WF hasn't advanced to a Sweet 16 since 2004).

FWIW, BC Hockey has 5 nattys; 6 runners ups; 26 Frozen Four appearances; 3 alums in the Ice Hockey Hall of Fame; 3 Hobey Baker (Hockey Heisman) winners; 30 alums that have played hockey in the Olympics;

There really is no rebuttal to the argument that WF is the worst ACC basketball program over the last twenty years. Pretty unfathomable, given up to 2004, you could make a solid argument that WF was at least top half of the ACC in basketball between 1980 and 2005:

  • 15 NCAAT appearances
  • 2 Elite Eights
  • 5 Sweet 16s
  • 2 ACC Titles

Just loserville over the past 20 years. Sucks.

From 1990-2005, Wake was the 4th best ACC program, arguably 3rd before Maryland won the national championship.

and who knows what could've happened with FSU in 2020 (not to mention, Forbes's best team)

Damn. Like Ph said on another thread, just when I think I've read every awful stat, there is another about how bad Wake hoops has been.

But is it proof that God exists and hates Wake Forest or is it proof that there is no God? Especially when a shitbag like Middlebrooks is in the Final Four...

Shitbag or not, had we gotten Middlebrooks, we would have almost certainly been in the tournament and most likely been a 7 seed or better.
