New coaching search thread

Others have said this, but if we are seriously not considering Forbes for that recruiting thing, it's malpractice. It was nothing.

We know Amaker was a candidate. We know he's probably on campus. We don't really know who has been eliminated or has removed themselves besides Wes.

We don’t really know that regarding Miller, either. All we know is that a couple people on this message board said he told his team he was staying, but plenty of coaches have said that and left for a better job.

There’s also a chance that Amaker is being used as a stalking horse to prop up another candidate that Currie prefers more.

“You think Amaker or Matta is going to sell more tickets and generate more donations?”

We have no idea.

No, Currie. Just no.
No Amaker. Period. (Plus, I do not want a dookie sitting on our bench.)

IF this search fizzles into an offer to Amaker, my plans to follow Wake bb again go out the window. My reaction to him is just like my reaction to bzzkill and DFL.

I’d rather let Chill coach a year, raise a bunch of money, and throw it all at somebody good next year.

If Amaker is the guy, we need a Tennessee style coup to get Currie the fuck out of here.

I think now is a good time to remind everyone of the original reason for firing Dino: lack of postseason success. Just really comical to reflect on when we're weighing hiring a guy with 4 postseason wins in 23 years...just comical.

All Hatch cares about are appearances. That is why he liked Manning and why he did not want him fired. He cares nothing about basketball That is why Amaker might be his #1

Yeah, pretty clear Forbes had no chance based on his prior recruiting penalty. It's insane that Wake could throw all that money at Danny Manning and not find a way to go big for Matta, Anthony Grant, etc., but somehow I find that totally believable.

I'm actually even willing to believe we did aim high and offer big. This board underestimates how tough a sell this job is right now. Even when things are good we have a small fanbase (win it gets bigger, but still small), smaller budget (better than it was, but still small for P6), and a tough conference with two national powerhouses a few miles down the road.

This is not lowf, it's just the reality. And then add on how bad we've sucked and all the baggage from Wellman, Bz, Manning, etc. We're too big of a project for established/later in career guys. For someone who is younger and wants to coach at the upper level for another 20+ years we are a HUGE gamble that may not be worth it. Can we be a great program that is a national contender who plays great programs every year? Yes. Are there easier ways to get there than at WF right now? Absolutely. If I were 35 and thought I could get a legit P6 job in the next five years, I'm not sure I'd be interested in the Wake job. We've dug ourselves a big hole.

So you take an Amaker who maybe can dig out of the hole a bit, then hope for a better coach in five years. Or you take a chance with someone who is young with promise who can grow with our program for a while...maybe strike it big. Maybe not. This is the situation we've created for ourself by poor administration of the basketball program for over a decade now. You reap what you sow.

ETA: So given all this as a fan I'd rather take a huge gamble and atleast have some excitement of the unknown and high potential with a young coach than just push out my not giving any fucks for another 5-10 years.

We don't KNOW that Wes has either.
Just on this message board.
Admittedly, given it was reported by D.R. who worships the ground Wes walks on, the source is strong.
But. It's still just message board chatter.

Amaker would be an absolute disaster and an indication of just how badly Wellman destroyed the program. We need a splash hire to jolt this program, even if it’s someone young and unproven like Miller. A guy who crashed and burned at his only big-time job but has been pretty good at Harvard ... yeah that’s not going to do it. Almost might as well have kept Manning.

Don't think it's Amaker

I'm sure this has been covered, but his wife is a very successful Psychologies with a senior position at Harvard's Medical School

Although... per LinkedIn there's a pretty egregious typo in her current title

I know Wake is not a perfect job and there are a lot of inherent challenges, but I still believe Wake has what it takes to compete at a high level. Even with the disasters that were [Redacted] and Manning Wake was still able to pull in some pretty good talent. Even the wet paper bag that is [Redacted] was able to get a four star recruit in CMM. Those two were just completely inept at retaining quality role players to create the continuity and winning culture that used to be in place under Odom and Prosser.

I like Amaker but would be beyond disappointed if he's our next coach.

Recognize that he also had a top-5 recruiting class, including the #1 recruit in the nation who later was arrested for jacking off to porn while driving and subsequently died by driving into a moving train (two serparate moving violations, but solid mentorship, Tommy), at Seton Hall and managed to woefully underachieve.

Amaker checks all of Hatch's boxes. First, African American. Second, elitist education at Duke. Third, coaching elitist schools Harvard and Michigan. Hatch is creaming in his pants with the thought of hiring Amaker.
