Obama Nominates Merrick Garland for SCOTUS

McCain hasn't been McCain in over 8 years.

Huh?

80-92 R
92-2000 D
2000-2008 R
2008-2016 D

Rs have held the presidency in 20 of the past 36 years.

I mean 1980 was almost 40 years ago. Pubs are about to have lost 5 of the last 7 presidential elections (and the popular vote in 6 out of 7 of them). Numbers is right. Their coalition is too narrow and gets narrower every day as old whites get replaced by young diverse voters

Had McCain left politics after 2000 he would have retained a sterling legacy. Whored himself out and cannibalized his reputation since 2008.

Giuliani's self destruction is much worse. Had a great reputation after 9/11, but Tim Russert exposed him as an asshole in 2007. Would have been damaged goods after 2008, but has nuked his reputation in the last two years. Christie will end up somewhere between McCain and Rudy. Trump's tracking for Joe McCarthy territory.

The way the Bridgegate trial is going in NJ. It's possible Christie will end up somewhere between Dan Rostenkowski and Rod Rod Blagojevich.

A buddy said there was a discussion last week on Charlie Rose and the concensus was that Hillary would prefer that Garland was confirmed in the lame duck session. Would be payback to Obama(s) for getting her elected and would avoid a bloody battle in her first 100 days. Problem is she still needs to get RBG replaced in her first year. 'Pubs would play the same BS in 2018 otherwise and much tougher sledding in 2019.

This is why RBG needs to resign this summer and Breyer the following summer. And while she's still a justice, RBG should start avoiding microphones.

Average age of the last three justices to leave the court was 80. Ginsburg is 83, Kennedy is 80, and Breyer is 78. Agree on the RBG and Breyer timing. Kennedy will be a flip, so major battle if he dies in 2020 or HRC gets a second term.

Was disappointing and surprising to hear McCain suggest that 'Pubs block HRC's nominees, but no surprise that Cruz is on the bandwagon. Cruz was the brains behind the government shut down over Obamacare against his Senate colleagues' objections and zero chance Obamacare would ever be repealed before 2017 at the earliest.

Also interesting that conservative legal honks are suggesting that 'Pubs should pass legislation shrinking the court or let that occur via attrition. The opposite of FDR's attempted court packing. Cruz may take it on himself to filibuster every HRC nominee.

Bizarre that some 'Pubs whine about Trump potentially refusing to concede the election, but went through 60+ sham Obamacare repeal votes when they didn't have any real chance of that happening and are now plotting to remake the court because they can no longer win presidential elections.

With gains in the SCOTUS, we might be able to enact legislation that would provide restrictions on the 2nd amendment. And why not, the 1st Amendment is not unfettered.

Yeah, so um apparently Clarence Thomas groped a woman at a dinner party back in 1999

Far from sold on Kaine, but would gladly trade an early Hillary impeachment for a Kaine presidency as long as 'Pubs allowed up/down votes on his judicial nominations. Bork, Thomas, Estrada, Miers, Liu, and Garland episodes were all embarrassing. Generally like Obama and Feinstein, but lost respect for both for refusing to confirm Roberts. Obama's empathy excuse was painful. Can totally understand voting against Thomas, but everyone else in recent memory has been eminently qualified even if I personally didn't like their politics. Nominate good candidates, propose pragmatic sensible policy solutions, run good campaigns, and take your lumps for doing otherwise. Fuck either side if they refuse to advance either Dem or GOP nominations because their party nominated shitty candidates who lost.
