Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

Not according to that 1 article that was quoted earlier. I have no idea who is more accurate, that reporter or our sources.

You mean the reporter from Oklahoma?

2 mil might have been around the "base salary" but Shaka's base + incentives would have driven his actual contract upwards of 3 mil.

Wow Tulsa stepped to the plate and really delivered a whopper of an offer.

Mitchell looked very rusty. He was not 100% but made some decent plays. When he's 100%, he'll be fine.

What if Tulsa hired Smart?

Wake folks, why are we hearing about Manning getting counter-offers and not hearing about Manning meeting with his team? What's the news?

If Tulsa hires Smart, it would prove we shouldn't have wanted him in the first place. It would be the biggest coaching surprise in my lifetime.

I know that you are not serious but not firing [Redacted] last year may have had a big impact on this coaching search. Supposedly Dino was still being paid last year. If RW had cut [Redacted] loose last year, to keep the money coming in, Dino may have been forced to bite his tongue when Shaka called. This year with his buyout apparently completed, Dino was free to tell Shaka exactly what kind of boss Wellman really is...

Hadn't thought about the free to speak angle before, just the money being tied up paying two coaches.

In retrospect for Wellman, avoiding the impending shit storm, regardless of what happens with Manning, was probably worth giving Shaka whatever he wanted in the first place. And if not Shaka, then whoever was next down on the list and so on. Is it not worth overpaying a guy you want to get the fanbase, the students, the donors, the big wigs, etc. back on board and excited about Wake basketball? And ultimately regaining a little bit of confidence in you as an AD? Maybe they'd all still turn the job down. Who knows. No one knows anything right now. But the embarrassment that will come of this will not be undone for quite some time.

You guys can bitch about paying him 1.7 or 1.8 but the truth is if we didn't he probably would have walked. Then what?

Heck, at this point we would have had to pay a premium ($1.5M+) for Russell Turner....face it folks, WF b-ball is not what it used to be...so sad.

???

contracts also aren't what they used to be

the bigger the job, the bigger the price tag

I'm starting to think Manning stays at Tulsa. He's got a very young squad, he'll get a nice raise with little pressure. If he's successful he gets to jump to a bigger program in a year or two. I think coaches are looking at Wake and seeing a weak foundation (regardless of what we think, most coaches are going to assume our talent level isn't great), overbearing standards for recruiting, pressure from fans and ridiculous competition with L'Ville coming in next year. We were smart to aim high because a big name with a huge salary could probably deal with the situation, but a younger coach who is trying to establish himself might see this as a lose-lose despite the uptick in salary.

We dug ourselves such a hole over the past four years that we were going to have to overspend to get our program back on track no matter what. We were paying Buzz $1.4M? Paying a few hundred thousand more for Danny Manning is unpalatable but understandable.
