Wake Forest’s search for a new basketball coach is on hold, and will apparently remain so until Danny Manning makes up his mind.
Manning, the coach at Tulsa, was in Winston-Salem on Wednesday to meet with Wake Forest officials about the job. According to the Tulsa World, he is not expected to return to Tulsa, but will instead travel to North Texas for this weekend’s Final Four.

In the meantime, officials at both Wake Forest and Tulsa are waiting to see if Manning will agree to succeed Jeff [Redacted], who resigned on March 20. A source -- who is not authorized to comment but is familiar with the search -- corroborated widespread media reports that Wake Forest has offered the position to Manning.
Ron Wellman, the director of athletics who is leading the search, will also be at the Final Four. He has declined to comment on how long the search might take.

I can just feel his enthusiasm.

LOL. Amateur Hour.

Burn it down, burn it all down. New life springs up after a big blaze.

They are going to drag this out to next week aren't they since they are hobnobbing at the final four?

IN IN IN IN IN IN IN IN IN IN IN IN

That would actually be awesome. We'd be on 60 Minutes..."At Wake Forest the basketball coach isn't just a coach, he's also a student." RW can do some dance about giving second chances. Would be a PR coup

Boy, Dan really sounds enthused doesn't he? This should certainly fire up the masses in W-S.....

:couch:

Seriously, though. It's obvious at this point that Wellman and [ ] have done serious damage to this program. That means we have less ability to compensate a prospective hire in "program value" and will have to make up for it in dollars. We're going to over pay for Manning. We're going to over pay for whoever we get, and we're going to have to deal with it if we want to have any hope of climbing out of this mess.

+1 my thoughts exactly. RW's massive F@$&-Up is going to keep costing us for years. Financially + all the other costs.

If you are unsure whether to stay with the familiar or jump to the unfamiliar, you are going to stay with the familiar 75% of the time. If he is unsure at this point - after visiting and talking with Wake folks - he should stay at Tulsa.

What are the chances that a vanquished Ron Wellman calls it a career, leaves a Dear John letter to the fans, and retires to Bowling Green, OH with his power bottom Jeff [Redacted]?

Fucking MIKE WHITE just signed for 6 years/3.6MM. I know we apparently sent out feelers for him but no fucking way he would turn down 1.3-1.5MM. Zippy chance.

I don't think anyone has an appreciation for just how bad Ben Howland's reputation is among coaches re: NCAA compliance. Was rated the dirtiest coach in basketball during his last year at UCLA by an ESPN anonymous survey of coaches. We were not going down that road.

A few classes in summer school and he'll be good to go for fall practice....

+1

We would be providing a philanthropic service, save money, get and (most importantly) hire a better coach. Win, win, win. Sadly, such strategic thinking is not found among our Athletic Department.

This is EXACTLY what Frank Underwood would do (and analogous to what he did for Peter Russo).

Tuesdays would be double the shitshow, though.

It'd be a match made in heaven. We have a horrible rep (apparently) among coaches.

This ^^. So much this ^^^

If Danny Manning needs this long to think about it - he doesn't really want it. This is a job that you have to want passionately to have any chance to succeed.

Truly excellent post. Not only has Wellman been swanning around playing NCAA big shot while our flagship athletic program becomes a dumpster fire, but he clearly had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the decision to fire Bz. That delayed by several weeks what he should have been doing, which was identifying and making third-party contacts with his next coach. That's obviously was what the AD at Va Tech did, and he fired and hired a great coach in less than a week while Wellman was running around playing NCAA big shot and refusing to face the music back home.

Wellman owes the entire Wake community an apology, and at the end of his apology he needs to say "I resign."

What does a selection chair have to do after the field had already been selected
