Official post-2020 Democrats Thread - Dems in Disarray! Hot takes welcome here!

Why would Mitch allow Biden to appoint a cabinet? Mitch has the chance to cut him off at the knees from the beginning.

All while effectively selling the idea that Biden just can’t get anything done.

i don't think Biden or democrats actually underperformed. If you look at turnout numbers it was massive. I think its more a function of way more rural/redneck Qanon Trump voters came out than anyone ever expected. The biggest thing is Trump was able to bring out a huge number of people who don't vote. The only democrats in major places that really underperformed that I'm aware of are Cunningham in NC, but the affair scandal I'm sure hurt him a tiny amount and the Susan Collins race (that one could be a local oddity, not sure).

Biden is gonna nominate Jamie Dimon to be his Sec of Treasury and y'all are gonna blame it on Mitch when he was gonna do it all along

I don't think Biden underperformed. As far as I know, this is how Democrats did against Republican incumbents for President, Senate, and House.

Biden beat Trump
Kelly beat McSally
Ossoff and Warnock drew runoffs with Perdue and Loeffler due to GA rules.
0-fer every other race

Progressive challenges lost. Centrist challengers lost. All of them lost. McSally and Loeffler were appointed and Perdue would have won in any other state.

So that leaves Biden. Biden is the only one who beat an incumbent who had won an election before. On top of that, he's going to win the popular vote by over 3% and over 4.5 million votes. He expanded the Hillary map by bringing WI, MI, and PA back to blue plus he brought in Arizona and Georgia.

Hell, let's look to history. Between FDR 4th win and Obama 2008, the Democrat nominee got 50% of the popular vote only twice, LBJ (61%) and Carter (50%). Democrats have gotten 50% or more in three of the last four elections. Biden was on all three tickets. And he was on it with a younger multiracial person.

So we can't say he underperformed. That's nonsense.

We can ask why Democrats didn't do better. Sure. But blaming the one person who came through? No.

This is probably gonna blow me up, but I don't actually mind Jamie Dimon as Sec. Treasury. I mean he's probably the best banking CEO, you actually want someone who 100% understands the entire industry and monetary financial system, and any actual additional oversight regulations really need to come from the Federal Reserve and congress. Nothing in the banking industry or Too Big to Fail will change without legislation to reinstitute Glass-Stegal.

Personally working in the finance industry now and during the financial crisis, and reading a lot of peoples books in the aftermath, especially concerning the role of Hank Paulson, I feel like you really actually need a competent person who fully and completely understands Wall Street. And, Jamie Dimon fits that.

This is all reasonable and fair but when people see that he's worth $1.3 Billion Dollars and that Elizabeth Warren is ready to tear into the banks like a Jesuit Priest they are going to get mad.

If there's anything we can learn from the last few election cycles, it's that people on both sides hate the big banks and few people on both sides don't. Bring in a Secretary of the Treasury who will hold them accountable and create viral moments while doing it. Katie MF Porter.

That may be true. I work in finance for a big bank and completely understand the hate. I'm all for sensible regulation and potentially splitting apart investment banks and commercial banks to reduce systematic risk. But the financial industry, banking, and monetary system is incredibly complex and you need someone who absolutely understand every part of it. That sort of limits the pool of potentially fully qualified people to former high level executives either in banking or across the federal reserve system.

I'll also say I'm a fan of Elizabeth Warren and her ability to have actual detailed plans for issues we face across the country. I wouldn't hate her as secretary, but I'd prefer her in the Senate to continue to push legislation even though nothing gets passed Moscow Mitch.

The problem with having someone like Dimon at the Sec. Treasury is that he will take care of himself and his cronies more than the American people. The last thing the parasitic big banks need is more influence.

It depends on the purpose of the Secretary and the purpose of the banks. If the plan is business as usual, sure get someone from the inside. If the plan is to make sure that the laws keep the financial sector from taking advantage of the American people, you need someone who understands the industry from the outside. Katie Porter captures the consumer perspective.

Another point, speaking of Porter, we can talk about the disappointing House losses, but several Dem reps like Porter and McBath defended seats in former Republican strongholds. Now they're not one time wonders. They're established incumbents.

Biden's only job at first should be managing the national covid response. Advancing any sort of agenda is secondary to that.

I agree with the eviction moratorium and it needs to apply to mortgage foreclosures as well.

Anyone got any feels on who fills out his cabinet? Obviously Buttigeg is in there somewhere. Liz Warren?

I think this misses the point of view of a lot of republicans who voted for Trump, but also weren’t full on Trumpers with flags from their pick-ups.

Their concern with Biden wasn’t so much that he was a socialist, but he was a puppet or a Trojan horse for the Democrats that are. So, if they voted for Biden, they believed the left wing of the party would be pulling the strings.

Can you cite your source?

Part of the reason that people hate big banks (and there are plenty of legitimate ones) is that they don’t actually understand what they do and the role they play.

I probably only grasp about half of it and I’m an above average educated person.

Maybe. Anyway here’s some data:

Warren is stuck in the Senate because Charlie Baker gets to pick her replacement and has the political capital to pick a Republican.
