There is some good insight in this NY Times op-ed (Ross Douthat). https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/01/opinion/corruption-democracy-trump.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage A lot of what got us to this point is the every day, low level corruption, good ol' boys network, corporatism, and revolving door between lobbying/consulting/government that so many Americans are sick of. Unfortunately they voted for a guy who really wanted to be King of the Swamp instead of draining it.
