Ongoing Dem Debacle Thread: Commander will kill us all

Yes. But on the other hand, primarying Nancy Pelosi should be pretty low on the list of priorities in CA behind policy concerns and flipping key districts.

you would be effectively be ending your political career if you were to primary Nancy Pelosi. it's why nobody legitimate has really seriously attempted to primary Pelosi in recent years

idk that seems bad but ymmv

the assumption seems to be that pelosi might as well keep running because everybody's happy with her leadership, etc., but this is classic Clinton-style bully the bench into submission so you can claim there are no reasonable alternatives

It is bad. But if you’re an activist, SF local politician, statewide Dem leader, whoever, replacing Pelosi doesn’t seem like a top priority. She’s still on her game. She did step down as leader. She’s a symptom of a larger gerontocracy problem, not the problem. So like Biden not Feinstein.

tomato tomato

we actually don't know the world of possibility that would be opened for activists, local politicians, statewide leaders, and whoever if Pelosi were to step down

this is the gerontocracy trap, man

Yeah, that's a good way to put it.

Why on earth would you want to keep working at 84? Jesus christ, just buy a sailboat and hire a captain with all the fucking money you've amassed of the decades and fucking relax a little.

eta: the common refrain is that they want to take care of their kids, etc., but their kids are basically old enough to collect social security.

Jesus...that SS line really puts it in perspective.

Would the political gerontocracy be as big of a concern if life wasn't so much harder for 20- and 30-somethings now compared to 20+ years ago?

Interesting question.

Other question is why is it so much harder? I'd guess the gerontocracy not making room for those to come from below and get their shot is a part of it.

Right. That's part of the question. If old politicians were like kindly grandparents who worked hard to make life easier for their grandkids (affordable education, easing transition to adulthood, maintaining basic human rights, etc), would we be as concerned about a gerontocracy in politics? If it was easier for older people to retire and give way to the next generation in other areas of society, would we be as concerned about 70- and 80-somethings running for office?

Because the "work" isn't hard so might as well keep the gravy chain chugging
