you would be effectively be ending your political career if you were to primary Nancy Pelosi. it's why nobody legitimate has really seriously attempted to primary Pelosi in recent yearsYes. But on the other hand, primarying Nancy Pelosi should be pretty low on the list of priorities in CA behind policy concerns and flipping key districts.

Why on earth would you want to keep working at 84? Jesus christ, just buy a sailboat and hire a captain with all the fucking money you've amassed of the decades and fucking relax a little.

That spigot does not have to end when she retires from congress. And give up on that sweet sweet insider trading knowledge? No way.
Right. That's part of the question. If old politicians were like kindly grandparents who worked hard to make life easier for their grandkids (affordable education, easing transition to adulthood, maintaining basic human rights, etc), would we be as concerned about a gerontocracy in politics? If it was easier for older people to retire and give way to the next generation in other areas of society, would we be as concerned about 70- and 80-somethings running for office?Interesting question.
Other question is why is it so much harder? I'd guess the gerontocracy not making room for those to come from below and get their shot is a part of it.
Opportunity hoarding, imoInteresting question.

Because the "work" isn't hard so might as well keep the gravy chain chuggingWhy on earth would you want to keep working at 84? Jesus christ, just buy a sailboat and hire a captain with all the fucking money you've amassed of the decades and fucking relax a little.
Yeah and Gen X is getting it the worst from the boomers. Using Pelosi as an example, let's say she serves one more term and retires after 2026. That cohort will be in the 46/47 - 61 yo range before that seat is ever "open" to them.Opportunity hoarding, imo
We have this problem in academia too.Opportunity hoarding, imo
