President Trump hosted Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte today at the White House, noting with a smile during their joint press conference that he's closer ideologically to Conte than other G7 leaders.

Why it matters: Italy's two-month-old populist government is skeptical of both the Euro and the EU, and spoiling for a fight on immigration and trade. Trump's sympathies fall more with Rome than with Brussels or Berlin.

Another area of overlap is Russia. "We do believe Russia plays a fundamental role in all international, geopolitical crises," Conte said today, echoing Trump. "If we want to solve problems, we cannot choose the counterparts to deal with.”

Worth noting: Interior minister Matteo Salvini, central to the coalition as leader of the far-right League party, is often compared to Trump. He quoted Benito Mussolini yesterday on the former fascist dictator's birthday. Trump could have told him that would be controversial, because he did virtually the same thing during the 2016 campaign ("I want to be associated with interesting quotes," Trump said at the time).

The headline from today's visit had nothing to do with Italy, though. Trump said during the press conference that he'd be willing to meet with Iran's leaders "any time they want."

Between the lines: The Trump administration has emphasized destabilization and delegitimization when it comes to Iran, encouraging Iranians to pile pressure on their government and hinting at support for regime change. But Trump says he's also open to negotiation with President Hassan Rouhani, who has reportedly turned down meetings in the past.
 
Italy's Salvini channels Mussolini in tweet on late dictator's birthday


Populist Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini made a veiled reference to the late fascist dictator Benito Mussolini on Sunday.

Salvini tweeted "tanti nemici, tanto onore," meaning "so many enemies, so much honor," a variation on Mussolini's famous "molti nemici, molto onore," or "many enemies, much honor." He tweeted the comments on the anniversary of Mussolini's birth.

Last week the leading Roman Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana called Salvini the devil in a blistering critique of the interior minister's migration proposals.

The magazine ran a front cover with a Latin headline: "Vade retro, Salvini," a play on Jesus' words: "Get behind me, Satan."

In the interview with the Sunday Times, Salvini expressed admiration for both US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin, saying Trump was "brave" in his election campaign and has been "consistent" since entering the White House. He said Putin's economic policies have filled the Russian people with "pride."

It’s pretty crazy that there’s an active investigation looking specifically into Russian interference into elections on behalf of Republicans and these guys are just leaning into it and jetting off to Moscow.
 
Just wait till someone claims asylum and just stays in Moscow where all their money is. That'll be hilarious.
 
Maybe Russia will explain to Rand how good fences make good neighbors.

Nope. I’ve been saying it for a while...this Russian scandal runs deep into the Republican Party. There’s a reason they have been hellbent on railroading the Mueller investigation.
 
Based on that article, it’s possible a Russian spy has been tracking Hillary through the Secret Service intranet at least since she ran in 2008.



“She had access to the most damaging database, which is the US Secret Service official mail system,” the source said. “Part of her access was schedules of the president – current and past, vice-president and their spouses, including Hillary Clinton.”
