Role of the Media

Gawd. These people really are nuts. They seem to be treating all of this as one giant reality-tv show or a pro wrestling match, which, given who they voted for and now blindly follow, seems to fit. On the one hand they attacked and berated the guy, then suddenly turned around and wanted to take selfies and pictures with him. It reminds me of a description a Senate colleague once gave of Joseph McCarthy, whom I'm sure nearly all of these folks would adore as they do Trump: "He was like a mongrel dog, fawning over you one moment, and the next moment trying to chew your leg off." Oh, and for all those who are criticizing Maxine Waters or the Red Hen business owner, this is where it all started - with the POTUS and his minions. They're a regular parade of insults, threats, bullying, intolerance, crass behavior, and all the rest - led by the Reality TV show master of ceremonies himself, the POTUS.

and yet when one lady who works for the administration is politely asked to leave before finishing her cheese plate, that's being uncivil. but same lady uses her official gov't Twitter account (not to mention her boss also taking to social media) to call out these small business owners, which results in death threats, harassment and eggings (sometimes not even at the correct business in question), and that's perfectly ok.

Remember the baker that refused service to Biden and was cheered by the right?

The answer is no, no one remembers that story, because Biden had the civility to not fire back and encourage crank Yelp reviews.

The photo-op aspect of this is a little underreported (insofar as any part of this story is underreported)-any time a public official patronizes an establishment, there is some tacit risk of a photo-op (even if its unplanned), and that business may look complicit. Not quite the same situation, but this is why I was 100% in favor of Bethune Cookman students booing the shit out of Betsy Devos when she spoke at graduation. Had they stayed "respectfully" silent, we'd get a Presidential tweet about how she was "warmly welcomed".

Which is the real reason why conservatives (mainly their politicians and right-wing media) are so upset about liberals, god forbid, actually giving back some of what they've been taking since at least Obama first took office. For GOP officials, these types of protests and incidents may provide them with some useful publicity to use on their base, but they know it also makes them look bad, or at least unpopular and controversial, with the general public. If they can convince or pressure or intimidate liberals to just shut up and be "respectful" (silent), then they can continue to dominate the media and portray themselves in any way they want. And that goes without mentioning the fact that conservatives remain free to say anything or do anything to liberals with no real consequences. The double standard - and it's not just conservatives pushing this, but some self-described moderates and anti-Trumpers as well - is that liberals must always act "respectful" and never indulge in protests, harsh rhetoric, insults, or any other behavior conservatives and right-wing media don't like, but conservatives will remain free to say anything, in any fashion, about liberals that they wish, as Trump's incessant tweeting and rhetoric proves. What's good for the goose is not good for the gander, apparently.

...The bakery owner said he was particularly put off by remarks made by former President Obama: “Very simply, ‘you didn’t build that.’ Speaking on small businesses and entrepreneurs all across this country and actually last night my wife was up all night. No sleep, she’s worked a full 24 hours.”

Critics were quick to seize on Obama’s statement at the time while his supporters said the quote was taken out of context and being willfully misconstrued by his opponents.

McMurray said his exchange with Biden’s team was quick and respectful.

McMurray’s story was thrust into the national spotlight with the help of conservative news sites, blogs and the wide-reaching Drudge Report. It eventually caught the eye of Paul Ryan, the Republican Party’s Vice Presidential nominee at the time, who requested that McMurray introduce him at rally in Roanoke a few weeks later.

“We are gathered here today to send a message to the Obama-Biden team that we did build it,” he told the crowds before recalling his decision to turn Biden away. “Nothing personal, but I just happened to disagree with the President and the vice president on a few things.”

Ryan gleefully took the stage and said: “He just gave my speech. I’m voting for that guy Chris.”...

To be fair, the leading 24 hour news network does purposefully report fake news.

Let's be real. If Republicans trolled high school kids who were mass shooting victims and had no sympathy for high school kids facing the specter of mass shootings, they surely aren't going to care about reporters.
