Ron Wellman speaks...

Selling the naming rights of the Joel is a huge slap in the face to the city of Winston Salem. Wake has become so disconnected with the community it is amazing they still have any casual in town fans.

They should leave a few dollars off the table to pay respect to a home town hero.

?? This doesn't make any sense. Wake Forest doesn't owe Winston Salem anything. Wake is one of the top employers for the city, generates the most exposure and generates the most revenue for the local economy.

Naming rights would bring in a minimum $500k per yr that would likely be used to supplement enhancements for the Joel. Which will entice more casual fans: A renovated arena with new features and attractions for the community or a passive half million dollar gesture to "the community"?....Heck you don't even have to change the name. Just go with "The Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Colisem Powered by CookOut".

(The $250k per year talk is nonesense. Even the U of Albany gets $250 for their hoops arena rights)

I grew up in Winston-Salem. I don't think many/any will care. And it certainly won't affect the overall support for Wake around town.

What the LJVM needs is a good Wake team- likely still at least a couple seasons away. :(

I will re-up w the Deacon Club the first day Wellman is gone.

Is that why there is a $1.5 Billion investment in downtown Winston with our name on it? As for naming rights, the most heralded college basketball programs in the country play there. It's worth a lot. Don't let Wellman hate get in the way of the facts. We have never been more connected to Winston Salem.

Please, he was no hometown hero should have never been named that. should have remained W-S Memorial Coliseum. obviously youre not from WS.

Wellman: "...this could be a year of significant advancement"

So "significant advancement" is the new "historical competitiveness" that we "could" maybe return to.

Who writes this mediocre BS for Wellman? Seriously, one of the BIG reasons that Ron Wellman has thoroughly alienated a huge portion of the Wake donor/fan base is his absolute refusal (or complete inability) to talk honestly about our athletic programs. He continually hides behind amateurish spin like the above instead of coming out and talking plain about where we are and where we are going. His fiasco of a press conference when he was forced to fire Bz was a defining moment in his sheer arrogant refusal to level with the Wake Nation. If he would just be straightforward a lot of donors/fans would accept it, but we won't accept being pissed on and told it is only a passing rain shower.

He should have retired years ago, and the fact that Nathan Hatch and the BOT continue to pay him at or near the top of the range for ACC ADs, with his track record is outrageous.

We really do need a new AD. He's just arrogant and obsolete.

No problem with selling naming rights to the Joel though. Wake needs the cash and we can honor Lawrence Joel by other means in a proper and respectful way.

With the stadium remodel, the acquisition of the baseball facility, and the acquisition of the coliseum Wellman will forever be historically a great AD for permantely establishing the Wake Forest Sports and Atheletics Campus at Deacon Blvd. Whatever you may think of him, he presided over that.

What the fuck are you talking about? He was born and raised here, the city literally threw him a parade.

Sorry if I would rather the coliseum named after a medal of honor recipient, than some corporate BS.

Any money left over from the billboards?

"WellmanOut Court at the OGBoards.com LJVM Coliseum"

i'll donate.

the donors put enough pressure on (by not donating) that ronnie was forced to fire [Redacted] while praising him to the high heavens. people got excited and started giving. they forgot that [Redacted] can't be blamed for being what he is. ronnie anointed him savior, watched stubbornly as the basketball program burned to the ground, and then declared victory when he was forced to get rid of his hand picked guy.

IMO, being a Deacon Club member is about supporting Wake athletics....not about supporting the AD.

in it's current incarnation when you support the deacon club you are contributing to ronnie's little fiefdom. you are allowing his mismanagement to continue. second worst athletic PROGRAM (department) in the ACC last year.

ron wellman has got to go.

He was a Tar Heel fan. I don't want the Deacons playing in a coliseum named after a goat.

So we can get our ass kicked in stylish facilities? Whoopdeedamndo.
