I was in New Mexico hiking at Philmont scout ranch in the late 90s. We were about 60 miles deep away from civilization.

We were on the crest of a ridge hiking next to a valley when we saw a grizzly on the opposing side of the valley about 300-500 yards away. The sheer fuck-you size of that thing and the way it moved was jaw dropping. It gave zero shits about being hidden. Alpha predator doesn't begin to describe it. We kept hiking, but no one looked at that thing and thought they had any control over what it wanted to do.

I've seen a dozen black bears in the wild. 10 men could kill one of those. A full grown grizzly is just a straight up killing machine.
