Snipers at the Super Bowl

Why? There were plenty of cops walking around the stadium with a bullet in the chamber of their handgun. There's 0 point in having an unloaded weapon.

Guy's finger is definitely hovering over the trigger in one of the pics above. It was claimed that the rifle wasn't loaded that day on the link at deadspin...

The 3rd picture? His finger is on the trigger guard, where you are supposed to keep it until you are ready to fire. Its a standard pose.

why wouldn't we have snipers at the superbowl?

Yeah really. It's a more obvious target than most places we fret about. I've heard rumors that there are snipers at Cinderella's Caste at Magic Kingdom.

i can't believe people are bitching about whether the highly-trained sniper should have his finger near the trigger, like he's some backwoods yokel in a tree-stand.

Got ya...you're referencing the posed picture.

That said, having an unloaded sniper rifle during the actual game makes as much sense as having an an emergency flashlight in your home without batteries.

There were snipers at the Wake-Louisville Orange Bowl. One had a sniper rifle, and the other spotted for him with a nice scope.

Those flashlights are dangerous with those heavy D-cell batteries in them.

There have been snipers at the Super Bowl for years. SOP in most large crowd gatherings where there is a high perch.

What if it's aimed at the person sitting next to you? Would that give you the warm fuzzies?

Just do the right thing & obey the laws and people shouldn't have to worry about this kind of stuff.

He probably wasn't at the game because he quickscoped the host and got booted from the server.

Yup. I remember reading Jerry Jones saying how they planned ahead for the perches at the new Cowboy's stadium & then during super bowl week some celebrity put a video on twitter... if memory serves, it wasn't even during the game; they had them stationed across the street on top of another building keeping an eye on all the fun.
