Swank Signs with Jags

Never understood how great kickers in college rarely get to the NFL. I realize it is a numbers game in the NFL, but there are some shitty kickers in the league.

Saw Swank kick the field goal last night. That's pretty sweet. I hope he gets some serious play time with the Jags or elsewhere. I still think he has a shot of being a solid NFL kicker.

It can take time to make it as an NFL kicker:

Few players in Chiefs history could match Nick Lowery for persistence. The Dartmouth graduate was cut 11 times by eight different NFL teams before earning the starting job in Kansas City in 1980. He had huge shoes to fill, replacing his own kicking hero, the legendary Jan Stenerud. But Lowery lived up to the pressure, earning three Pro Bowl berths and scoring 100 or more points 11 times in his 14 years in Kansas City. He made 80 percent of his field goal attempts – including 20 kicks of 50 or more yards-to become Kansas City’s all-time leading scorer, with 1,466 points. Lowery kicked 329 field goals, none more important than the 32-yarder that ended Kansas City’s 27-24 overtime win over the Steelers in the 1993 playoffs. But well before then, he had established himself as one of the team’s key weapons. “He can do it, and he knows he can do it,” said Frank Gansz, the Chiefs coach in 1987-88. “You hope the game comes down to the wire. Nick gives us an edge there.”

Seems like there will also be less kick off specialists in the NFL due to the new rules. Have been hearing that almost all of the kickoffs are touchbacks. That is pretty whack.

Yeah, wasn't that rule change strictly to eliminate the need for kickoff specialists? They get paid 500-600K tops. Come on, owners.

They pretty much guaranteed that I can flip around for 5 minutes after a score by basically eliminating kickoff returns. At some point, advertisers will realize that ads around a kickoff aren't as valuable without the threat of a player breaking one.

Seabass kicked it through the uprights... terrible rule change.

Good luck to Sam - looks like Scobee may be ok, but Sam will get to showcase his stuff and could get picked up by another team if he doesn't catch on with the Jags.

I maintain that you should get a point for kicking it through the uprights on a kickoff. It goes through, you get a point, and the other team gets the ball at the 20 like it's a touchback.

I've said this for several years.

I don't think they cared about the kickoff specialists salary as much as the roster spot he was taking. It was done under the guise of player safety as well as the majority of serious injuries occur on kickoff returns. If they ever go to 18 games though that player safety issue will be shown to be complete BS.

I heard earlier in the year the rule change was to cut down on the numerous injuries that occur during kickoff returns. Maybe that was a smokescreen though.

Why do you keep saying that? Does anyone ever agree with you?

So a rouge.

It's kind of similar to a rouge in the CFL.

Oh man. My bad for being dense. Pos rep.
