Rumors swirling that we are finally pulling the resources to help arm the rebels. Thoughts?

No need to spend money fighting an proxy Cold War knowing the winner will probably hate us eventually anyway and eventually side with Iran.

Russia doesn't have time for Syria. They are too busy invading the Ukraine.

We never seem to tire of creating the pit of quicksand we then step in. Those who ignore history...

This was on reddit the other day, queue of Syrian refugees for food:

Agree with the basic sentiment about the US occasionally making foreign policy blunders, but Putin doesn't seem to understand the lessons of history either. The Soviet Union fell apart because their economy could no longer support the Cold War. Countries that were artificially slapped together (USSR, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia) with zero regard to shared history and culture predictably fell apart. Putin wants to recreate the USSR, but Russia doesn't have the financial or military resources to make it happen and the countries he covets don't want to forfeit their independence again.
