Tell me about European football clubs

I know nothing about European football clubs, but here's a quiz I found online to pick your "perfect" team: http://www.selectsmart.com/premier/

1.Manchester United FC (100%)

You like your team to get stuck in and play on the edge. It also means you think Arsenal players are pussies. Which they are.
Found this comparison online...sound about right?

"STOKE CITY AMERICAN COMPARISON: Chicago Bears. Ancient team, unparalleled tradition, usually can’t score, hit some real lows in the 1990s and 2000s, pummeled its way back into contention."

i can't imagine being a stoke fan

honestly if i were to start all over, i would probably choose southampton

they play ridiculously good looking football, have arguably the best academy in recent memory, and punch above their weight

i clearly don't like trophies though

Stoke have won one trophy of any significance in their history. I wouldn't call that a "tradition."

Also, on deadline days (last day of the transfer window when clubs can buy players) there is a Sky Sports guy outside the clubs offices. The inbred trolls from Stoke show up to get on camera. It isn't pretty.

According to this I should be an Everton fan.

nobody should be an everton fan

Don't do it to yourself!

Actually do. I wondered in the wilderness for several years as a casual EPL fan, marginally rooting for Spurs (until they sign Gio and constantly changed most of their Starting XI every 18 months), then attempted to root for Fulham because of the Americans (but that got old as I realized that I'd didn't care for any of their other players) then pretended to switch to Aresnal for a hot second (like maybe 3 days, so many Frenchies and Arsene sucks).

Finally ended up on formally adopting the team I always rooted for secondly, Everton. It just felt right someone who has been a Wake and Cubs fan his whole life. The contrarian in me just feels at home.

Roma, Roma, Roma

1. Great song, great home atmosphere

2. Team on the rise

3. Getting a brand new state of the art stadium

4. Francesco Totti is one of the all time greats

5. They play a very entertaining brand of team football: best defense in Italy (fewest goals received in Europe) to go along with a fast, attacking, opportunistic style

6. Fairly young team

7. The players enjoy playing together and for each other - there is a fun atmosphere around this club as well as a bad boy image

8. Their main rival: Lazio was Mussolini's favorite team (if such things matter to you)

Been following the EPL for around 8 years now, still don't have a club I support. I pull for Everton over anyone else in the EPL, but I wouldn't say I support them in any way. Pull for the Americans is pretty much how I choose who to root for in a match.

Phillip Lahm, considered (one of, if not the) best fullbacks in the world.

Franck Ribery who at 30 still has pretty good speed, and generally has great ball control while dribbling.

Bastian Schwienstieger, versatile midfielder, highly intelligent player.

Thomas Mueller, young, attacking midfielder. Very talented with room to improve.

Mario Gotze, young, great technique, should develop into a great player.

Toni Kroos, great technique and ability to distribute, potential to be scary good.

Arjen Robben, generally considered a world class douche bag, he also has a world class touch, good speed, dribbling, and crossing ability.

They have others developing very nicely, but those are, in my opinion, the top rated players on the team.

I feel like you have Ribery and Robben swapped around, though both could be categorized as d-bags. At least Robben is a law-abiding citizen.

Robben is one of the few players in the world where everybody KNOWS what he is going to do and defenders still can't stop him from doing it. Such a twat, but such a special player.

Like Messi going left, or Crissy stepping over the ball.

We really need an idiot Chelsea supporter on here to mock.

Oh, and here's a handy Bundesliga guide:

The biggest thing to keep in mind if you're an American selecting a European club to support is that they are not sports franchises like exist in the US, they are "clubs" and they each have developed uniquely over time. This means that in many cases supporting a club is also making a political statement, or outwardly affiliating yourself with specific ethnic or religious groups. Supporting a club is something that says a lot about you, far more than just "I like 3 players, so I cheer for the red shirt with the black stripes". There's nothing in American sports (well, college athletics to a far lesser extent) that resembles this.

So watch a lot of matches, and research the clubs very carefully. It's not something you have to jump into right away, take your time and make sure you're identifying yourself with a group that largely matches your views and beliefs - the team on the pitch is just a public extension of the group of supporters. That's who you are really joining.

Are you eastern Orthodox? Is that the most important identifying characteristic of your life, and you are generally relatively socialist in your politics? Then Olympiakos (Greece), Spartak Moscow (Russia) or Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) should appeal to you.

Are you related any former KGB or other security forces members? Are you a supporter of strong, autocratic governments? Anyone with Dynamo in their name (Dynamo being the former KGB sporting club) is set for you. Dinamo Zagreb, Dynamo Moscow, Dynamo Kiev, etc

You think Hitler had some good ideas? You wouldn't mind seeing a return of some form of fascism? You think Jews are dirty thieves that are ruining the world? Chelsea, Lazio, and a host of eastern European clubs (Lech Pozan, Zenit St. Petersburg, etc) are right there for you.

Are you Jewish? Do you self identify as one above anything else, or regularly find yourself grouped with them? Tottenham or Ajax are your likely homes.

Are you a blue collar, pro-union guy? Do you like being part of a big group of relatively like minded people from "looked down on" cities who are struggling a bit in the post industrial western world? Say hi to Liverpool!

Are you a punk, a queer, a general anti-establishment type? FC St. Pauli is home to any and all - as long as you aren't right wing.

There's tons more - each club in Europe has it's own history and identity that has accumulated over time. Pick the one that speaks to you.
