This is as good a time as a reminder as any -
Russia's SU-24's are using badly outdated avionics to the point where pilots are just buying commercial handheld GPS and rubber banding them to their HUD's.
Putting 24 year kids with limited training (as most of Russia's pilots are) in a combat zone very close to another country's air space was always, always, always asking for trouble. There's no way in their equipment, with their training, that they weren't going to wander over the border from time to time. Just not possible. Russia has been playing with fire ever since this operation started, they simply are not capable of these types of operations even in ideal circumstances.
That being said, Turkey shooting this plane down when it clearly wasn't trying to penetrate Turkish airspace aggressively is just absurd. I'm sure the US Joint Chiefs are having an absolute shit fit right now with our "allies" over what is a titanically dumb way to make a major incident.
