CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt announced a new program on Thursday that will allow athletes who did not finish their degrees to return to the university to do so.

The initiative, called "Complete Carolina," will be funded by the university's athletic department. Folt announced the measure during Thursday's Board of Trustees meeting.

Don't know why a kid would stay in school with this on the table if they had a decent shot at the pros.

Exactly. This basically encourages kids to jump early, knowing they have a parachute. That said, lol at UNC trying to be proactive academically so that folks will ignore the absolute joke their program is. Smells like a NCAA sham...they'll try to paint UNC as pioneers in encouraging athletes to complete education.

I for one am proud to see our State's leading University also lead the Nation in this important initiative. Huzzah!

But what about the asians?

Sadly, it seems that you and your ilk can keep discriminating against them because of their skin color until we evolve enough to change the law to forbid it.

They're already paying them to not go to school, why not let them actually get something out of it. But have fun with those profs when you only have the reputation of a guy who used to be decent at basketball 7 years ago.

I also see this as being dangerous if schools ever start paying players. "Ok, so if you come to UNC, we'll give you what we're allowed to give you now, and double that in a few years."

Tired, jejune, unsophisticated.

tj is taking your title from you.

A little better, but still not great. You should go check on your buddy tj over on the politics board. He's been on fire lately.

Can't wait to see how our tax dollars actually make their way to pay for this. Not chance the actual athletic department is paying for this through any other means. The outside source funding has to go to the bag men.

A benefit provided to scholarship players, not available to the rest of the students - how is that not an NCAA violation?

When you don't actually have to have classes, your overhead costs are pretty low.

The overhead costs are already incredibly low. Not sure any athlete returning from even the briefest of careers as a professional is going to have trouble paying for a couple of years at Carolina.

Is this all for looks or could it potentially help out their APR?

I don't see how it could possibly help. Doesn't Academic Progress only track those athletes with NCAA eligibility?

There's a time limit to graduating, so I don't think this will help. Will be interesting to see if/how much their APR slips without the fake classes.
