Wake Forest Football Recruiting

Assuming the kicker has a strong leg and will be used for kickoffs. Or perhaps a punter?

WR and kicker were not two positions I thought Wake would go after in the transfer market. I was thinking we would look for a corner or perhaps RB or QB depth.

Jack Crane is a strong leg kickoff guy. WSU was11th in the nation in touchbacks. Could have been more, but they also used deliberate pop-up kickoffs.

He has the leg strength for 70 yard field goals. Just not great accuracy. He left WSU because they got a more accurate FG kicker. Crane wants to kick FGs. Not sure how that works with Sciba already at Wake.

I found this article on Crane. In the article it says, "Crane, a fourth-year junior walk on at Washington State this past season, is leaving WSU for one simple reason: like all kickers, he wants to kick field goals. "

I think Crane will have the same issue at Wake as he had at WSU. At WSU he was behind a Groza finalist (Blake Mazza) and at Wake he would be behind a Groza semi-finalist. I checked his stats and he had touchbacks on roughly 50% of his kickoffs. I checked the stats for Wake and only one other person at Wake kicked in a game last year. I can not find any reference to any other specialists kicking in a game, other than Maggio, Sciba, and Murphy. I assume kickoffs are why they are looking at adding him. I did not find any record of Crane punting at WSU - looks like it was only kickoffs.

2021 OLB at Glenn HS with a big offer list.

Jack Crane's 247 timeline is a bit unusual. It lists him as a 2016 prospect, yet committed/signed/enrolled all on July 8, 2018. My interpretation is that he was a walk-on (PWO++?) in fall 2016 and was given a scholarship before the 2018 season.

If this is the correct interpretation, then similar information could be used to determine which players on the Wake roster, initially PWOs, eventually earned scholarships. That, of course, assumes Wake reports this information and 247 cares enough to post it.

Based on the article I posted, Crane is not on scholarship, so he has always been a a non-scholarship player/starter. He said he has not received any money, so he can leave and play immediately, even if he is not a grad transfer. Also, when I checked his career stats on his roster page at WSU, he is listed with game stats for three years (2017, 2018, and 2019) and it says he red-shirted in 2016. So, he has one year left to play. If 247 is showing him as committed/signed/enrolled in July of 2018, it would be in error based on is roster page at WSU.

If Crane is leaving WSU as a grad student transfer, with WSU diploma in hand, his status as walk-on or scholarship player has no bearing on his eligibility for fall 2020. Only important fact is whether or not he played at all in 2016.

Sounds like he could be helpful in the kickoff and coverage part of special teams. But will he be happy as just a kickoffs guy is the question.

His place kicking would need massive improvement just to get consideration for competing with Sciba.

Maybe he could try the 60 yarders. But then, he should be able to put it into the end zone on KOs.

So many times Wake has had kickers with quad pulls or tired leg... he may get some field goal tries as well as handle kick offs.

Assuming he wins the backup job. I imagine the coaches have told him the starting job is not open and he can compete for the backup position, but no guarantee he will ever kick a FG in a game. From what I can tell from his stats, he never kicked a FG or a PAT in a game at WSU over the course of three years. Likely the coaches are trying to sell on the idea of getting to attend grad school for free for a full year. According to his profile, he is a Construction Management major, so likely would take some graduate business classes.

Appears the Stanford WR (Stewart) will be committing to Wake shortly. Hopefully the CB from Stanford (Eboh) as well, but doubt it.

Jack Crane has transferred to Wake. Such an interesting move for both parties involved.

Coming in the summer. Will be interesting to see what he was told about FG, since Sciba is the starter and has been one of the top kickers in the nation for a couple of years.

Stewart is 6' 3 1/2" but he has only caught 14 career balls and only 1 since 2017. His one catch last year was a 40-yard TD.

The one reception came in big moment: Stewart gave Stanford an early lead against Cal in the big game:

Looks like he has good size. Stewart was twice named Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention.

Is it depth after Sage and Green we aren’t trusting?

Wonder if Stewart somehow will have two years at Wake and wait for Sage to move in?
