Wake's athletic performance under Ron Wellman's leadership

What about the other half? I have a tough time believing there are structural reasons why we can't be competitive at all in women's basketball and volleyball for example.

Out of our 16 sports, those are the two biggest weaknesses of never being nationally relevant. Volleyball used to be more competitive (mid level ACC), but it was back when typically 1, or 2 at the most, ACC teams qualified for the NCAAs. But now there were 4 this past year and we should make the NCAAs at least occasionally. Still pretty rare for ACC teams to be top 20 in that sport.

Women's basketball has just been bad. Lets hope Hoover is the answer there.

Isn't the only way to truely compare apples to apples is to take the sports Wake participated in and use the exact same sports for the other ACC schools scores?

From the OP...
"Last year, we finished in the bottom half of the conference in 15 of the 18 sports in which we participated. Year before last, we finished in the bottom half of the conference in 13 of the 18 sports in which we participated."

I think this is a sufficient answer to your question.

This end of May update finds Wake ranked 90th (157.5 pts) in the Director's Cup. Ga Tech is still the only ACC team trailing us and they can be found at the 100 position. However they are only trailing us by 13 points and they are one of the 8 ACC teams still playing in Baseball's field of 64. Ga Tech is also the #2 seed of the 8 teams qualifying for Match Play in Men's Golf. The Golf Championship is worth 100 points and second place is worth 90. I think it is safe to say that they will make a major jump in the standings by the time the scores are finalized at the end of June. In fact, it is possible that Ga Tech could jump over BC (69th with 263 pts) and Miami (65th with 278 pts). Although Miami is also one of the 8 ACC teams still in it for baseball. Additionally, there's still the Men's and Women's T & F wildcard at play.

Interesting Note: Florida State only participates in one more sport than we do but they are currently ranked 15th with 681.5 total points. They were also one of the 32 team field for Golf and are still in it for baseball. The number of sports we participate in is NOT the problem.

Bottom line - It is highly likely that Wake will have the distinction of being DFL among ACC schools in the Director's Cup competition for the 3rd year in a row.
