"The Cardinals selected Cooney out of Wake Forest in the third round of the 2012 June amateur draft. He climbed steadily through the St. Louis organization with his best season coming with Double-A Springfield. Cooney has pitched for Triple-A Memphis in 2014 and 2015. Eric ranked Cooney as the No. 6 Future Redbirds prospect for 2015, and described his repertoire as follows:

If you're looking for elite stuff, you'll not find it here. What you will find is a durable lefty with excellent command, who understands the value of getting ahead in the count (although he struggled with this a bit in 2014), and knows how to keep hitters off balance. Cooney gets a few more swings and misses than one would think given his lack of a true out pitch and a fastball that doesn't really blow anyone away.

he St. Louis Cardinals announced on Tuesday that the club will add Tim Cooney to the major-league roster so that the lefthander can start on Thursday in place of ace Adam Wainwright, who suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury on Saturday, according to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch.

Cooney is not presently on the St. Louis 40-man roster. In order to be on the active 25-man roster, a player must be on the 40-man. Reports are not immediately clear the machinations that the Cardinals will put in place to add Cooney to the 40- and 25-man rosters. The most likely course will see the club place Wainwright on the 60-day disabled list which will open a spot on the 40-man roster for Cooney to fill.

Hope he gets fucking shelled

He did not. Left with a 3-3 tie in the 3rd. Cards got the win over the Phils 9-3. Hopefully his confidence wasn't hurt as Matheny got him out in time.

He pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up 1 walk, 7 hits (including a HR) and 3 ER. In what world is not making it out of the 3rd inning, allowing over half the hitters to reach base and a 11.57 ERA not getting shelled?

First game in the majors. Did not take a loss. Philly guy was getting shelled even worse and Cards already had some runs. He got his feet wet and will learn from it. Faced Ryan Howard who hit a shot but got him out the first time. Got himself out of a jam in the first with no runs scored.

Everybody has to have their first appearance in the majors, his happened to be replacing the ace of the staff in front of 40,000. But he got through it, didn't cause a loss, got his first taste and hopefully in 5 days can come back with better stuff when they face the Cubbies at home. Hopefully also he will still be there when I go out there at the end of July for a Friday-Saturday against the Colorado Rockies. If he is, I will wear my Wake stuff.

Phils fan here.

7 hits is almost 2 games worth.

In classic Wake fashion looks like hes already been sent back down to AAA

Good. Hope he lights it up down there and gets traded for Hamels (who immediately falls off a roller coaster and breaks every bone in his body)
