from what I gather, the feeling is that it's hard to be extremely proud when it's clear that there are other places in the West that hold basically the same values but execute them more efficiently/less bombastically

I was born in this country so I don't really attach any accomplishment to being a citizen. It would be like being proud that my hair is brown. For someone that struggled to come here, I think I could understand being proud of American citizenship.
