Windows 7 question

Sometimes my Windows 7 gets incredibly slow at basic functions, like logging on or off an account (I have set up two accounts on our home PC, one for my wife and one for me). Sometimes I hit "log on" or "off" and literally nothing happens and the screen just goes dark and I cannot even shut down properly. Hitting a key or sweeping the mouse does nothing, the screen stays dark.

Sometimes when it just "windmills" or goes dark I try hitting "cntrl" "alt" "delete" and Task Manager comes up, but it doesn't produce anything.

Is there something that is causing Windows 7 to hang up like this occasionally? That I could clean out or fix.

Thanks!

PS: Please no snarky advice to buy an Apple. I got a great deal on a Dell Inspiron PC a year ago and it works fine most of the time, and even the Windows 7 is usually OK, just occasionally seems to hang up executing basic functions.

Start task manager when it slows down to see what's eating your CPU cycles. Sidebar is always a notorious hog that I turn off.

Of course, my Mac Book Pro has no issues after 3 years.

I looked for Sidebar but could not find it under Programs. Maybe I'm not running it, unless it is under another program.

You are a fucking idiot.

My version of Windows 7 does not have Sidebar. It has gadgets instead. So Sidebar is not the problem.

Thanks anyway.

Please explain? It's been a while since I've done tech work, but I'm pretty sure I'm not a fucking idiot.

If it is mostly/only happening logging on or off, I would check the size of your profile.
navigate to c:\users\YOURPROFILE, and right click on that folder. I have seen that when people save a bunch of crap on their desktop, it gets a little flaky.

and btw, everyone knows that linux is the best OS....

Will Linux run on a PC? Why do you consider it better than Windows?

Thanks.

Haha, I think he was mostly joking. Linux will run on anything. I wouldn't recommend it for non-tech savvy people though. It's still got a little ways to go in that department. Even its popular distributions (Ubuntu) take some decent know-how w/ a computer.

Ubuntu is great for older computers running crappy XP or other older OSes, but I wouldn't use it as an everyday OS.

Sounds likes the porno virus. I think your ram is infected. Replace your power supply for more speed.
