HP's UNC-Cheat Thread - UNC comes out on top, NCAA penalized by UNC

but but but the infractions were from before they changed the rules so they are not possibly responsible for their intent... right?

In related news, Missouri's Athletic Department Is Under NCAA Investigation For Alleged Academic Fraud.

Quote from a former tutor:
I have knowingly participated in academic dishonesty in my position as a tutor at the University of Missouri-Columbia Intercollegiate Athletic department, which is not limited to assistance with assignments. I have taken and assisted with entrance assessment, completed entire courses, and I been present to provide assistance with online assessments. It was encouraged, promoted, and supported by at least two Academic Coordinators for athletes in revenue generating sports, however, the wide spread desperation to succeed by other student-athletes at the bottom of an inverted pyramid of the organization’s construct cross (sic) multiple sports.

The one underlying issue with the ND vs UNCCH is that ND did it specifically to benefit individual athletes and was not used to help general students.

UNCCH did it for mostly athletes, but because general students got in as well, the NCAA can't control academic quality of an institution and that falls more on their accredidation IMO

Even more of a shitty move than ND, but maybe not where the NCAA is concerned

The thing with Notre Dame is actually a direct rebuttal of UNC's primary defense. Of all of the noise made on this case, this actually is a big deal (from a UNC POV).

My only hope is that in reviewing UNC's national championships, if they strip the 2005 one, they restore the 1998 and 2016 banners wrongfully taken from us. 7 fouls in a row called on a team with a Senior Point Guard and a ten point second half lead? GTFOH.

Anywho, as you were.

How UNC basketball’s academic aide may be connected to bogus classes

In 2007, when Eric Hoots was a video coordinator for UNC-Chapel Hill’s men’s basketball team, he sent an email to Deborah Crowder, the architect of the bogus “paper” classes that existed for nearly two decades.

In that message, he forwarded “AFAM Papers” to Crowder, who was the office manager for the African and Afro-American Studies department. “Thanks for the help,” he wrote. “I will see you soon...”

UNC received new notice of allegations. Supposed to be worse than 2nd version.

IC saying NOA was/is amended to ???

Beat me lol.

Appears that it's bringing back redacted allegations from the first NOA (i.e. basketball).

NCAA Issues UNC New ANOA

School officials met with the Committee on Infractions on Oct. 28.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- North Carolina has received another notice of allegations from the NCAA, according to multiple sources close to the situation.
This new notice - the third notice of allegations in the case - could be announced as soon as this week.
Sources confirm this new version reinstates aspects of the original first notice that were then altered for the amended notice. That amended notice, which was released on April 25, replaced the impermissible benefits allegation with a failure to monitor academic support charge and removed all references to the men’s basketball and football programs.
UNC met with the Committee on Infractions on Oct. 28 for what was deemed a procedural hearing to review UNC's response to the amended notice of allegations. UNC's Aug. 1 response forcefully argued that the NCAA wasn't following its own constitution and bylaws.
Should UNC opt to follow the protocol for the investigative process, this new amended notice of allegations resets the timeline for a resolution. The school has 90 days to respond to the notice, and the NCAA then has 60 days to provide a response to the COI, which then schedules a hearing to review and rule on the case.
The case dates back to June 2014, when the NCAA announced it was reopening its 2011 examination of academic irregularities in UNC's African and Afro-American Studies (AFAM) department, issuing the first notice of allegations on May 20, 2015.

They have a player being interviewed on ESPN admitting he cheated, describing how it was done and having everything he said corroborated by the person who helped him cheat. The person who helped him cheat has received a high six figure settlement from the university and been given federal whistleblower status. Yet, the NCAA didn't include this in their original charges.

It's one thing for a head football coach not to be able to keep up with every player's academic status. He has 85 players. If even only 1/3 need help, that's 28 guys. It's basically a full time job. On a basketball team, you might have 3-4 guys who might need some help. Any conscientious, detail oriented coach can easily keep up with that. For Royboy to do a Sgt. Schultz is dishonest and an insult to everyone's intelligence.

Can't wait for that Orange Bowl banner to come down at Kenan.

Wait, there ain't no Orange Bowl banner flying, lol.

Why do you think NCAA is going to do anything major to UNC-CH. It's more likely that the UNC-Ashville female soccer team will get the death penalty than UNC-CH will lose any banners, revenues or scholarships.

OGB could verify, but I am relatively certain you made this joke at least once already on this thread.

The NCAA balked when UNC challenged its jurisdiction (the accreditation folks have jurisdiction), and then the NCAA amended its allegations to strip those out; the NCAA gets sellers remorse (and/or starts to feel an existential threat exists, either concurrently or collaterally, especially with the movement towards autonomy) and re-amends to re-include as a part of their re-investigation to re-punish.

Reminder: 40% of Power Five Commissioners are UNC alums, as is the head of ESPN. This is about to get good.
