Wake Tennis 2017-2018

Also, aren't NCAA players are eligible to play in pro events, like the Winston Open?

This was only the 5th time in the history of Wake Forest that a team has completed the ACC regular season undefeated. Field hockey did it in 2002, 2003, and 2005 (4-0 or 5-0 records) and women's tennis in 2000 (8-0 record).
2008 men's soccer too, I believe

Congratulations to the men's tennis team on an outstanding regular season. Their play gives legitimacy to the real possibility for conference and national championships.

Yes, as amateurs. So they can earn ranking points but not any money (beyond their expenses). But as a practical matter, between going school and competing in college matches almost every week between January and May, it's very difficult to play enough pro events to get your ranking up to any meaningful level or really improve your game as much as you would by playing on tour full-time.

It also costs a lot of money to travel and play pro events--when you're a professional, you can use money you earn in excess of your expenses to cover your expenses at another future tournament. When you're an amateur, you can only accept money for your expenses on a per tournament basis. So if you lose your first match at a tournament and don't earn any money, you're in the red (could be significantly in the red if this happens multiple times), whereas if you're pro, you could have money you earned at a previous tournament to keep you solvent. -- For example, Rubin earned around 60k at the Australian Open this year. He can keep all of that and use it to finance his season, whereas if he were still playing at Wake, he could only accept up to what he spent for that tournament.

The soccer team had a tie in 2008 (against Duke), but you are correct that they had no ACC losses.

I still remain convinced that the 2008 team is the best team we've had in any sport and one of the best college soccer teams of all time, despite the fact that we didn't win the national championship.

Women's ACC Tourney Starts tomorrow. As the 6 seed, WF has a single bye. The linky to the bracket: http://raycomsports.com/sports_labs_docs/w-tennis/2017_w-tennis_bracket.pdf?utm_source=all&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=wten&utm_content=champ

Men's Tourney also starts tomorrow. As the top seed, WF has a double bye into the quarters. The linky to that bracket: http://raycomsports.com/sports_labs_docs/m-tennis/2017_m-tennis_bracket.pdf?utm_source=all&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=mten&utm_content=champ

New rankings are out today. The men remain #1 by a large margin. Petros is #4, Skander #13, Gojo #51, Seraphim #75, Skander/Seraphim #1.

The women are #34. Guerin #55, Davis #88, and Guerin/Ulyashchenko #70.

This loss would hurt us. TCU is a good team, but has lost to some really bad teams while they've had guys injured, so their ranking is really low and would therefore kill our ranking (cue:432435-page debate about whether bad losses hurt our ranking--spoiler: they do).

I just noted that TCU is now up to #4 in the country. They are really good when their full team competes.

WF plays #14 seed Louisville today in the women's ACC Tennis Tourney. L'ville upset Cuse yesterday. WF beat L'ville 4-2 in the regular season.

Also, the ACC named its all conference team, and WF's Kimmy Guerin was 2nd team all-ACC. She was the only Deacon among the 27 players named to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd all-conference teams. UNC had the POY and FOY. GT had the COY.

Women won a really tight match against Louisville. They play Georgia Tech, arguably the best team in the ACC, in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Will be a tough one.

The Deacs play NC State this morning starting at 10:00. Just beat them 6-1 last week, so hope the boys don't overlook the Wuffies. Then face the winner of Duke-Ga Tech. No reason for us not to be playing UNC or UVA in Finals on Sunday.

So far so good. Deacs won the doubles point and up breaks in the first set in 5 of the 6 singles matches.

Women lost 4-0 to Georgia Tech. Not unexpected. They are a lock for the NCAA tournament though.

Wake men are about to start against GT. The match is on ESPN3.

This ESPN3 coverage is very good. Good replays and commentary. They are mainly focusing on the first court but they are showing other courts as well.
