NOW Howland watch: UPDATE 3/20@ 10:30 new tweets

The Mizzou kid is also reported to be the funniest kid on campus and is in the Rough Rider hall of fame. So he is no less qualified than any other source we have.
In fact, based on those credentials, I'm rolling with him. Let's do this.

Howland looks like somebody but I can't quite place it. Two possibilities:

* There is a B-level actor about his age who usually plays a tough and the distinguishable feature is he's got like a screen graft the size of a half dollar on his temple or forehead

* The University of Georgia basketball coach from the 80s? The guy who coached Vern Fleming???

From 1 year ago: Wake Forest's Ron Wellman made a losing bet (but still won't admit it)

Still a great read.

Wellman is back at the ATM, middle of the night, splitting nines and doubling down against a face. Needless to say, there's a better-than-great chance he's going to exit here broke, probably next March. But he's not willing to admit that now. So he's standing strong while the other guys at the table shake their heads and feel badly for him, wondering why he didn't just walk away gracefully when the damage was bad but not as bad as it ultimately got.

I don't expect a presser to announce the firing, but seriously, if Wellman doesn't make any statement at all about Bzzz this week, he's just a piece of shit.

So is that a gnarly wrinkle or did Howland get into a knife fight when younger?

You don't hire a fucking coach based on his style possibly matching that of one recruit 2 years down the road. That is imbecilic!

No, you just hire his AAU coach as 1 of your assistants if you're SueConn.

Wellman has been a complete piece of shit regarding our bball program for a long time now, regardless of what he does or doesnt do this week.

I've been told there will be no Wake Forest press conference this week. So, there's that.

Maybe it's all calculated to f*ck BC and VT.

Ron is letting these generally-presumed-to-be lesser ACC programs announce their vacancies first. VT and BC's ADs then target the sort of coaches we might be interested: the Millers, Whites, Lonergans, and Amakers of the world. These bros are intrigued, but cautious; the BC or VT job could be decent they guess, but everyone knows there's a good-to-great possibility that the Wake job opens up any second now. I'm as far from a homer as you'll find but even I would state that Wake is, objectively, a much better basketball job than those. So, these up-and-coming mid-major bros hold off on VT / BC for now, telling their agents to stall and hem and haw a bit to buy them more time. VT and BC's ADs get frustrated and impatient, and move on to their respective 'next tier' of candidates, resulting in riskier hires for both programs. Then and only then, we announce [Redacted]'s resignation slash termination slash one-way ticket to Carcosa and we are in the catbird seat for any of these guys.

Or, Ron is lost in a Dillard's outside Dayton, OH and forgot that he has a blackberry equipped with a monthly data plan and full e-mail capabilities.

We can't afford Shaka, so what's the point?

This isn't correct. From what we've been told, Ron is choosing not to spend what it would take to get Smart or Marshall here. The difference between Smart and Howland isn't that much. I'm guessing Howland will be in the $2mil or so range, and Shaka in the $2.5-3mil range. The difference would be easily less than $1mil. With the excitement Smart/Marshall would generate, you'd largely make up that difference immediately in tix sales and merchandise. Now if you're talking about going with 1 of the mid-major types like White or Miller and paying them $1-1.5mil, then yes, you're talking about a substantial savings.

I think Howland would excite the fan base a great deal as well.

That's the first time anyone has ever said that. Howland revived UCLA and went to three straight Final Fours. Amaker revived Michigan and went to the NIT three out of four years before he got fired.

Ahhh ya took the bait.

Shaka makes $1.5 million plus incentives, and I'd imagine VCU would match anything up to at least the low $2s, if not $2.5.

Marshall already makes a bit more ($1.7 million), has openly spoken about money, and is having his best season ever right now, so I think that once you account for WSU's matching, it'd probably require $3 million to actually lure him away.

Fuck it, I'd be excited if it were Howland/Shaka/Marshall. I really don't care which one it is. I just hope we go for a big coach and not some midmajor guy or something like that. We can't afford another 4 years of rebuilding.

Amazing how people would still find a way to complain about hiring Howland.

$2.5mm is the magic number imo
