Official Spring Football 2014 Thread (Spring Game Saturday at 2:00)

I thought Sousa threw and played way better as the game progressed. So did Camerson but Sousa can definitely run. He could have had more rushing yards and at least one more rushing TD, if they were letting the QB's play through contact (down on first touch). That said neither are very accurate. Sousa got a lot of his completions when the D had to commit to the run and left the receiver.

You have to blame Grobe for not giving Cameron minutes last year and for not developing Sousa as a QB. And there were plenty of times when Price could have used a breather last year and Grobe failed to develop his bench. Grobe didn't leave to much for Clawson to work with this year.

It does disappointment me that the prior staff gave up so quickly on Sousa as a QB. I think he has potential.

Sousa might be workable as a Billy Kilmer type thrower with better wheels. Tyler was so far off it is hard to believe he can improve enough to play.

I believe that Sousa could become a serious play-maker under good coaching. He threw the ball better than I expected but obviously lacks confidence. It seemed that he was trying to guide the short passes. His deep throw to Harris was a nice throw. What was especially encouraging or discouraging, he did most of his damage against our #1 defensive backfield. He is a big kid (as WF QBs go) and glides when he runs. The potential is there. I can't believe that the former staff gave up on him as a QB.

That said, I truly hope that one or both of the incoming QBs will prove good enough to play immediately. Sousa's potential may prove to be nothing more than that.

Our offense is so anemic that it is difficult to get a read on our defense. Thomas Brown is impressive. Again, it is troubling that Sousa passed and ran so well against our #1 defensive backfield.

The running back position has been a problem at Wake for a long time and still is. Hopefully the kid from Charlotte can be effective immediately.

What was most surprising was the attendance. It was by far the largest attendance for a WF Spring game that I have ever seen. Clawson has energized the base; but if his first couple years are as poor as I expect that energy could dissipate quickly.

Mebane - do you know what the attendance was today?

I work with a GT alum who's VIP donor. He was complaining this week that only 1300+ attended their spring game last week
FWIW, I saw some of the GT spring game on TV when I was in Salt Lake City this week. Would be nice to be able to see the Wake Spring Game nationwide

I don't. I am terrible at crowd estimates; but I would guess 4000+.

It was easily 5x the size of the last Spring game I attended a couple years back.

It seemed like 10x the normal turnout of a few hundred.

I thought that Desmond Floyd was the most impressive player on the defense.

I would put the home side at just under half full. Sections 4-7 were packed almost to the top, sporadic folks in sections 3 & 8 and then the red zones were pretty much empty. East side and hill were closed.

I predicted early on that Travis Smith would be the starter by week three and I am going to stick with that. Even with the immense talent that he posses, I just think that starter by week one, for a true freshman in the ACC, would just be an extremely large hill to climb. Timing with the receivers can start happening at the player led practices in June. The difficulty for a true freshman will be learning to recognize and call the proper coverage for all the complicated blitz packages that will be thrown at him. Talent won't help you if miss a late shifting blitz. I don't think that film study alone is enough to get a player ready. You have to go live in order to truly get the knack for that. Splitting snaps... I think this will take a good five or six weeks. Five or six weeks might also allow the game to slow down. Once Travis can get to the point where he can just read and react. Wake Forest is going to love this kid.

I hope you are right about him. He will have a great opportunity to take ownership of the QB position as a true freshman.

I was in Section 7 and there was hardly anyone sitting near us.

I'd say there were 5000 people there at the most.

I commend Clawson and his staff for going out and getting two QBs in the frosh class

I think FSU ruined Tyler last year.

Cameron just doesn't seem to have "it" right now. Like the anti-Skinner. He looks the part on the sidelines. He throws a beautiful ball in Warm ups and drills. But when the lights go on and it's game time he does nearly all the little things that make a good QB wrong.

Considering where Sousa came from he should be commended. It is where he is heading that is a mystery. If he continues on this trajectory of gradual improvement, gains confidence, and limits his turnovers then I truly think we can win with him. If there was a game tomorrow Id be shitting bricks that he is going out there, but in one spring he improved from a WR who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn to a guy who finally looks like a QB.
