Official Spring Football 2014 Thread (Spring Game Saturday at 2:00)

Either way, Clawson sealed the deal. Give Grobe some credit if the process was already in motion.

I will also add. Grobe lost his top 4 assistants. Calhoun, Hood, Mullen, and lambert. They were top notch coaches and recruiters. He didn't do well replacing them. But overall, Grobes career at wake is the best ever. Clawson has work to do and I can't wait to see him attempt to match what grobe did.

Yes

Is there any place where I can find video highlights of yesterday's game?

Clawson was singing the praises of Marquel Lee after the game, said he has been really impressive all spring.

Lee looks alot bigger than 200lbs.. That must be a mis-print ( 220 maybe ? ).

For awhile now Wake has not been updating heights and weights. Lee weighed in nearly 220 last spring. Would not be surprised if he was near 240 now.

Point 1: Freshman starter definitely means the prior staff didn't develop players.

A redshirt freshman starter Skinner means that a coach had 3 prior classes in which a more experienced QB wasn't developed enough to play. Skinner came in after two QBs in Mauk and Taylor who went on to be very solid starters at Cincy and Nebraska. Obviously, Mauk's injury was a factor, but Cincy got much more out of Mauk than Wake did.

A true freshman like Price means that a coach had 4 prior classes in which a more experienced QB wasn't developed enough to play. Let's look at the QBs Grobe recruited during Riley's four years at QB, Wake's best stretch ever.

2010 - Tanner Price (2*)
2009 - Brendan Cross (2*)
2008 - Ted Stachitas (3*)
2007 - Skylar Jones (3*)
2006 - Zach McDowall (2*)

Point 2: Grobe never used that excuse because people would have laughed at him if he did. Grobe inherited many of the best players he coached from Caldwell, including the majority of his players who lasted 5+ years in the NFL.

Remember when I came up with the "All-Grobe team" shortly after Grobe resigned?

The players in bold were recruited by Caldwell. 10 on offense and 6 on defense, including specialists. That's out of 50 players/positions. 32%. Almost a third.

Now this is overkill because I don't have to convince you that Grobe inherited quite a bit of talent. From the same thread:

I thought we were talking about "developing" players. Not recruiting players. What does it matter who recruited them. Grobe had a heck of a lot more success with them than Caldwell. Therefor, in my opinion, he developed guys decently.

I will support an opinion that he had trouble recruiting. Think his old-school mentality hurt him, along with losing his 4 best coaches, along with best recruiters. He failed to replace them adequately.

You are also incorrect about Skinner "Had" to play because Grobe didn't develop anyone. Skinner "HAD" to play because his 4th year guy, Mauk, got hurt. What I saw was Grobe and QB coach Mullen slowly bring along Mauk, but getting him game action, to the point where the players were upset Corey Randolph was losing snaps to the cocky kid. However, I believe they did develop Mauk into a very good QB, and had he not gotten hurt, would have had a very successful season at Wake.

Lastly, touché on all the Caldwell recruited guys and quoting me. that's a good memory that I said those things. I stand behind them. However, it goes back to my earlier point. I only saw those guys play under Grobe, not Caldwell. Caldwell was a better recruiter. Grobe turned those recruits into wins, or atleast during my tenure, teams that nobody wanted to play.

Any idea why Grobe quit playing second string quarterbacks in game situations? I thought it was a good idea to give Mauk game experience.

That is a very legitimate question. I could not understand that. It almost seemed that he was afraid that the #2 guy would out perform the #1 guy and that he would have a QB controversy.

Was Mauk the best #2 Gtobe ever had? The answer could lie in Grobe's confidence in his #2s. He had a lot of bad ones, especially post-Skinner.

Skinner was Grobe's best #3 ever.

In 2003, grobe's starter was Randolph, backup was Zac Taylor, third string and red shirting was Mauk. That was probably his best QB situation.

I would say 2006 was. 1. Mauk. 2. hodges. 3. Skinner.
