Official Spring Football 2014 Thread (Spring Game Saturday at 2:00)

with that throwing motion?

This isn't the NFL. Guys every year are starting QBs in the college game who are too short or fat or have ugly motions or plain old can't throw a ball with accuracy past 30 yards. Can he be effective within our system and win games is the question. An ugly motion isn't the worst thing in the world.

He was amazingly accurate; but seemed to aim the ball on short throws. He threw a better deep ball than I expected. Sousa should be the unquestioned starter going into the Fall. Perhaps he will be displaced before the season begins, but he needs reps with the #1 offense. It was striking how the gold team could not move the ball until he took over as QB. If he can complete 50% of his attempts while limiting his turnovers, we can win with his running.

If the OL stinks, then nothing else will matter.

If the group is coachable and they are focused enough to put a body on all defenders, then they will be ok. Yes, you better have an elusive QB that can make plays on the move... but we have that!

The play in the above article did not make the final highlight video. The point being... give him a little time and he will find a way to make a play. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXd2jcKKrtw

If Sousa is beaten out, is there any chance he finds time at RB?

I agree mebanedeac. The coaches need to remind Sousa to play his game, but take care of the football and don't turn it over. His running can create problems for our opponents.

I left the scrimmage thinking we've got some good football players, but we don't have any All-Americans or All-ACC first teamers. If we can stay away from injuries (I wonder what Cory Helms's status is), I think we will improve as the season goes along. Imo, the problem is we need to be good early as our most winnable games are early in the season.

Sting, how much better is the OL since the start of spring practice? They'll have 2+ weeks in August to turn into something, but from the reports on this thread, NOBODY is impressed with them. The "Put a body on them" style only works with lightning quick runners. If our backs are slow, average defenders can read the play and get off the blocks to make the tackle. My point is why can't our OL drive block like they did to earn the scholarship in the first place. We have one of the lightest D-fronts in the ACC and we can't blow them off the ball.

Smith must be a god if he is guaranteed to stay healthy and can run with the first and second team in practice.

We are looking at yet another freshman starter. Yet more evidence that the prior staff was not developing players.

Don't think the equation is that simple. Freshman starter = prior staff didn't develop players. Riley was a freshman starter.

Don't care to debate it either. Saw Grobes staff for 6 or 7 years. Basically 75% of his career at wake develop great players. More than they could be on their own, and maybe even at other schools.

Can we strop comparing? Grobe had a stretch at wake that has never been done. Clawson has a lot of work to do to match it. When does the statute of limitations run out on "Grobes classes" screwing clawson? Grobe never used that excuse and won a bowl game over significant PAC 10 opponent his second year.

Grobe's seat was warming up the season before the ACC Championship. And that was because he finally had all of "his guys".

Trust me on this one. If you could have seen today's display in person, you wouldn't need further evidence.

On a positive note and I forgot to mention earlier.... Clawson's demeanor in the Spring Game were the exact opposite of Grobe. Clawson sported a head set and was very animated throughout the game.
No standing with arms folded or picking of artificial grass. Will this pay dividends? I have no idea. But, it was refreshing to at least see someone appear as if they gave a damn.

The year he had the acc poy and a national trophy winner. Seat warming. Lol.

Grobe's seat was not warming. And I think all reasonable people can agree that Grobe had a great run. Towards the end though, they were not recruiting well. It'll take Clawson into his third season to really start getting his guys on the field.

Fair. We will see with clawson. Love the energy and recruiting so far. It's up to his staff and players he recruits whether the hype translates to wins. And an acc championship or 5-6 bowl games in 11 years.

On offense, it will have to be sooner than year three. We desperately need a QB, an additional RB and a legitimate TE. Based upon what I saw today, at least these three positions will be freshmen starting this season.

I will also add. Grobe lost his top 4 assistants. Calhoun, Hood, Mullen, and lambert. They were top notch coaches and recruiters. He didn't do well replacing them. But overall, Grobes career at wake is the best ever. Clawson has work to do and I can't wait to see him attempt to match what grobe did.
