2016 Football Recruiting Thread - Notes from NSD Press Conference and Reception

Traveon Redd had 3 INTs and rushed for 38 yards as Magna Vista rolled over Martinsville 47-6

Jeremiah Brown and SW Guilford lost 21-13 to SE Guilford to drop to 2-4 on the year.

Edit to add Christian Beal ('17 commit) had 12 carries for 104 yards with TD runs of 4 and 53 yards in a 31-30 win over Page.

Watched Beal play a few times and looks like he could be a really solid guy for us. Any of the recruiting guru's here think he's an immediate impact guy?

Also think Beal could and should jump up in rankings before arriving on campus.

I have a friend who has a son at Reagan and went to both East-Reagan games and said Beal pretty much beat them by himself and that he was an absolute stud. Pretty good since this guy is a UNC fan and he coached High School FB for years

Redd appeared to be pretty slow. Do we have a confirmed 40 time?

FWIW, article on the game indicated it was not the best of conditions. Muddy field, rain, etc.

"“To be as sloppy and nasty a night as it was, I thought we executed really well,” Magna Vista head coach Joe Favero said. “We didn’t turn the ball over too much - the center did a great job, the receivers caught some balls, the running backs did a good job holding on to it - and we executed really well for a sloppy night.”

Kind of what I'm thinking. Really good in state recruiting win for our staff.

Page HS in Greensboro - where Danny Manning went before moving to Kansas

Whatever happened to Dez Wortham? I see that he is still listed on the team roster.

He was dressed last week. I just assume he's 4th string and there aren't enough carries to give him any playing time.

There are few skill positions occupied by players from last season: QB, TE, 1 RB. All others are RF or true F. Remarkable.

An interesting 2016 recruit is expected to visit today. Those of you that have followed this thread for a while probably remember the name Rico Dowdle (Asheville, NC). He is a RB recruit that stayed on my Big Board for months. He was offered all the way back in July 2014 after he attended the Underclassman Camp. At one point I thought he had fallen off of the FBS recruiting radar altogether after he was suspended by his HS at the beginning of the 2014 season for disciplinary reasons, but then he added an offer from Boston College, was invited to visit UNC unofficially, and Notre Dame began to aggressively recruit him to come to their most elite camp in South Bend. Dowdle ended up attending camps at both Notre Dame and Tennessee.

Dowdle was asked to play QB this season for his 3-A Asheville Reynolds team and has been a dominating runner this year. He had 1,000 yards rushing by the end of September and started October off with a 249 yard / 6 TD performance last night against highly rated 3-A rival Asheville HS (oh, and he sat out the 4th quarter).

Where Dowdle’s recruitment goes from here remains tough to predict. His most recent offer is from Vandy and he is on a list of 4-5 RBs that could get a spot if Vandy misses on their top target (Wake-commit Jamauri Wakefield is also in that mix of players that Vandy might target). Dowdle remains on the radar for Notre Dame (and that info is from Notre Dame recruiting websites NOT from Dowdle). If things don’t work out at any P5 schools he could end up at App State.

He is being recruited by all schools as a RB. I don’t have a sense for how strong Wake’s interest is or whether the staff would make a spot for him. I could definitely envision him getting new offers in the recruiting “end game” that takes place in December/January.

Quite a few kids had byes this week: Jamie Newman, Essang Bassey, Cade Carney, Jeremiah Brown, Jacquez Williams, and Christian Beal all had Byes. A number of games postponed due to rain as well.

Emmanuel Walker and Lake Marion were postponed until Monday

Taleni Suhren and Audrey Kell were losing 12-7 to Olympic in the 3rd quarter when the game was postponed. Will resume Monday.

Johnny Ray and Wando were postponed until Monday

Tra Redd and Magna Vista won 68-6 over Halifax County. Redd had a 33-yard TD catch an an 18-yard INT return for a TD

Zander Zimmer and Bishop Moore went to 5-0 with a 34-7 win at South Lake.

LaRonde Liverpool and Landstown will play Monday

Je'vionte Nash and Oakleaf won 30-16 to move to 5-1 on the year

Jamauri Wakefield had 16 carries for 43 yards in a 43-0 loss.

Malik Grate and Pendleton lost 40-14. Grate had a 47-yd TD catch

Carlos Basham Jr and Northside won 42-14

Dominic Maggio and Boys Latin won 29-14 over Pallotti

Lukas Masterson and Gulf Coast won 32-14

Greg Dortch and Highland Springs will play Monday

Thought I'd post my question over here.

How has our back end recruiting been? Are we going after any corners this year? We got any players red shirting or will we be looking at post grads for next year?

Taleni Suhren was invited to the Shrine Bowl. Same with WR target Larry Collins.

Cade Carney, Jeremiah Brown, Jamie Newman, Malik Grate, Emmanuel Walker and Johnny Ray all missed the cut.

At cornerback I think the two guys to be most excited about are already enrolled - Dionte Austin and Amari Henderson. Austin had a number of P5 offers. Henderson had an early offer from Penn State and turned down an invite to attend Michigan's big recruiting weekend when he committed to Wake. Austin is playing as a true freshman and Henderson would have played if he hadn't missed time with a hamstring injury. I've heard positive things about both since they enrolled.

The 2016 class has a commitment from Essang Bassey. How much you are excited about him depends on your view of how successful a 5'9 corner can be at the ACC level as WRs get taller and taller. Bassey has very high end athleticism (meaning his 40 and vertical) and has been electric at times during his senior season in HS. So it really comes down to his height - which I really think is the reason that he didn't attract P5 interest.

At safety, Wake is redshirting Jessie Bates who attracted P5 interest in the recruiting end-game in 2015. In the 2016 class Wake has a commitment from Traveon Redd. Redd turned down a number of other P5 offers and is one of the most important commits in the class (in my opinion).

I am also wondering about what depth for the future OL do we have on redshirt this year, sitting on the bench or coming in with 2016 class.

We need Redd to come in and be ready to play. We are hurting back there.

I continue to be mystified that we are not recruiting John Lamot. He made the Shrine Bowl (of course his coach is the HC for the game); but last night Eastern Alamance defeated N. Guilford, defending 3A state champions, and Lamot completed 25 of 28 passes for almost 280 yds. and ran 19x for 153 yards. On average he is involved in about 4 TDs per game. As I have said before, QB probably won't be his position in college; but the kid is a winner. He can play multiple positions. We need players like him.
