Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

He started off this year really well, but he has thrown up a lot more clunkers this year - walked at least 4 guys in 7 games - and his BABIP is helping to keep is ERA below 3. His BB/9 is bottom tier in the league.

He is still good, not what I was saying, and definitely a top 15/20 pitcher this year - case can be made for top 10, but I struggle to say he is close to cy - I know he will get thrown in there because of 16 wins and a sub 3 ERA, but I gotta think people will look past that - and he needs a few more really solid outings.

Also, this Cubs defense is historically great - all the pitchers are getting helped out by that.

I didn't mean to come across as if I was attacking you or anything - was just adding on to post a bit. I agree he'll get closer to the NL Cy Young than he probably should based on advanced stats.

On the other side of the coin, see KB has moved past Murph in Westgate's MVP odds.

And rightly so

Will the Cubs make him a long term offer after his year?

Cubs beat the Padres 6-3 for the series sweep. Hendricks gets his 12th win and Chapman another save. The Cubs are playing well in every phase of the game. They are 17-4 in August and 27-10 since the All Star break.

I think the Cubs were/are trying to find controllable arms because they know they can't afford him and he isn't listening on discounts. I think a lot of it depends on what happens this year with the team and if they will open the checkbook enough for him. People are saying he is looking for 7/$200 - thats going to be way too much, but you never know with opt-outs what the cubs will do.

Just ran through the salary cap because I am bored on a conference call - the people coming off are:

Travis Wood - $6 million
Trevor Cahill - $4 million
Aroldis Chapman - $11 million
Dex - $8 million
Rossy - $2.2 million
Coghlan - $4.8 million

Off After 2017:
John Lackey - $16 million
Miggy - $14 million
Hammel - $10 million (club option)

People who will get raises:
Arrieta
Rondon
Bryant/Russell/Contreras/Almora/Schwarber/Hendricks/Montgomery - all very minor since they aren't arb eligible yet

Contracts Not extended candidates:
Grimm
Strop

All that being said, we can afford him and there will not be that much extra we need to add next year, so it's possible, especially if we buy out his last arb year at a really low number so he is reasonable until miggy and lackey are off the books.

Also, I think the resigning of Dex will be a big issue this offseason - he will get money from somewhere, and its a matter if we want to keep him for what he brings to the chemistry as much as on the field. At his age, this will likely be his last chance for a "big" contract, so he will be looking for 4-5 years, almost a guarantee Cubs won't go there, but 3 is a possibility. That would suck for Almora, though.

I think we all thought Dex was gonna get PAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIDDDD this past offseason too though.

He needs to finish strong -- after a slow start he was killing the ball right until around Labor Day last year but did not have a good September or postseason

True, I think he has a better chance this year with two straight solid years - but everyone is saving for 2018, so there may be an unwillingness to shell out a ton of money for a leadoff hitter that plays average defense - and he is coming out in a year where there are lot of mid level OFs on the market that would get the same money he might (Trumbo, Saunders, Desmond, Joey Bats) with Cespedes as the only big money OF on the market (maybe include Desmond here depending).

I think he gets 3/$45 from someone this year at least. Might be us.

I believe future contracts and front office moves will be determined by how the Cubs finish this season. If the Cubs fulfill the championship expectations this year the pressure will be off the front office and they will be free to implement the future. A nucleus of Contreras/Schwarber at catcher, Rizzo at first, Baez at second, Russell at short, Bryant at third, Soler in left, Almora in center, Heyward in right with Zobrist and Szczur in reserve would be ready to compete in 2017. The pitching staff is already in place. Fall short of a championship and the expectations/pressure for a championship skyrocket and the possibility of trades and FA signings increase from every corner. Time will tell.

As the resident expert on Dex's financial worth I say PAY THE MAN

Very true - only caveat is that Zobrist will still be starting at 2B most of the time next year, he's making way too much money to be a reserve - I think they keep Baez in this super platoon role where he can play all over the field and give Maddon the ability to manipulate his lineup however he wants based on the pitcher - he will settle into a position at some point, but Ian Happ is coming up in the next couple of years too - so who knows.

The one not bright spot is other teams that have good pitching namely the Giants & Cards where the Cubs have a sub 500 record head to head. The Nationals also have good pitching but the Cubs have a winning record vs them and who knows if Strassburg even pitches again this year. The Dodgers are doing it with mirrors as they have 7 pitchers on the DL.

Gotta figure its Cards vs Giants in wildcard game as I think Miami will fade down stretch. Really need to beg for a Giants win as facing the Cards would put all the ghosts of the past on the stage.

The Cubs are 34-16 against NL Central and 28-9 against every team that isn't St. Louis. Just feasting on the bottom part of the division.

I think our record against the cards is somewhat misleading - we got swept during that stretch where the team was out of sorts and losing to everyone - outside of that series in June, the Cubs are 6-4 versus the Cards - and three of those loses were on the bullpen.

Im ok with playing the Cards. The Giants scare me, they are so hit or miss - when they are on, there is no stopping their offense that just singles you to death, when they are off, they are super bad.
