General Election Thread: Two Weeks Out

The left keeps trying to label people right wing because it does not want to deal with the issues and concerns of people who disagree with the left raise. The basic argumentation of the left against any dissenting voices has mostly become deny, ridicule, label; rinse, repeat. Like I said before, there is lots of evidence for this leftist behavior on these boards.

Serious question: do you honestly think this is not the case on the right as well?

I don't know if I agree or not that the country hasn't been this divided racially since the 1960's (see Rodney King riots), but that's just an aside.

I think social media, the 24/7 news cycle, video of police violence incidents, and a legitimate focus by large swaths of the population on societal injustices in general (be it based on race, income, gender identity, etc.) have allowed information to infiltrate more households. What was once considered to be a joking "driving while black" stereotype and "oh black people don't like the police" came into people's living rooms through social media and videos of police brutality. It's one thing to hear "a black man was shot by a cop in Tulsa" and another to see the video of what happened. Police accountability and holding those in power responsible for wrongdoings seemingly only followed the latter occurring.

I'd agree with all of that and the sooner we weed out the wack job cops who have murdered innocent black men, the better. Not sure about the Keith Scott shooting because I haven't seen enough information to form an opinion, but obviously the Terrance Crutcher shooting was murder and hopefully the cop pays the price. I'm still part of the group that thinks violent protesting is the opposite answer to alleviate some of these problems.

This is why I hate political correctness so much. Ultimately it is about silencing dissent.

Pat Buchanan was a similar candidate in the 1990s, but he did not get much traction in the Pub party. Trump is a better and more entertaining vehicle than Buchanan was, but I think the bigger cause is there were far fewer angry white folks back then, and the economy was ticking along fine back then. Hard economic times provide more fertile ground for nativist and authoritarian demagogues.

GOP went off the rails in 1964, 1992, and 2016. Recovered after getting destroyed in 1964 and losing a close election in 1992. Have a better chance to win now then they had in '64 or '92, but will be much harder to recover this time no matter the outcome. 14M primary voters voted for Trump mostly as a backlash to Mitt and McCain. They're never going back to the old GOP and moderate 'Pubs will become libertarians or independents if the Trump party survives past November.

Haven't seen any data on it, but seems reasonable that Perot '92 and Buchanan '96 voters would be a huge correlation with current Trump voters. They're at least in their early 40s and have long been disgusted by social change. Wasn't enough critical mass in the '90s, but may be enough now in the short term. NC GOP knew Amendment One was a temporarary reprieve and were stunned at the HB2 backlash. Already lost the war, but may win one last big battle.

Read an interesting article within the last couple of days (maybe even on here) that said Trump's plan in pandering to black audiences didn't have anything to do with increasing his popularity with people of color, but was just so he appeared to be more palatable to white voters who now would say "look he isn't racist."

This claim is highly speculative and unproven, to say the least.

No you just think they're "Hill shills," "judgmental assholes," and "globalist assholes," who don't care about poor people in this country because they're too busy caring about poor people in other countries.

And that's just in the last two pages of this thread.

The utter lack of respect and downright meanness that you and other Clinton supporters have shown for anyone who disagrees with you is what drove me to become the asshole you see before you. But deep down I still have nothing but love and tolerance for you and your beliefs.

Well, yeah, that's why he's doing it to largely white audiences.

I'm still somewhat struck by the incident with the black female pastor. When talking to her church she interrupted when he started talking about Clinton and asked him not to discuss politics. He was agreeable and carried on. Then he went on Fox News the next day and insulted her. It was such a concise encapsulation of who he is - too much of a coward to confront someone face to face, but too thin skinned to let it go. So he went to his safe space and flung arrows.

We know who is doing it:

"For 2013 (the most recent year available), it shows that whites accounted for 71 percent of all sexual assaults documented (above their total percentage of 63 percent of the U.S. population), while Latinos accounted for 9 percent, far below their total percentage of 17 percent. And as a percentage of all “serious violent victimizations,” sexual assaults represent 11 percent of the violent crimes against Latinos. For gabachos? 18 percent. The BJS also noted that for the period from 2005-2010 about 66 percent of sexual assualt victims knew their perp, and that whites had strangers commit violent victimizations against them at a rate of 9.2 per 1,000 people, compared to 9.8 per 1,000 for Latinos—so much for the notion of an army of faceless Mexicans stalking their fair-skinned prey.

For those who don’t comprende: white American citizens are far more rape-y than Mexicans can ever hope to become."

My response to 07 was meant to be as ridiculous and jokey as his comment.

Here's an idea. If you are interested in discussing issues, don't categorize everyone as "the left" or "the right." If you want to spout bullshit, then by all means, go ahead.

I also think that violent protests are antithetical to the aims of progressing in the direction of improving race issues in the country.

Or respecting each other.

I've seen little to no respect from the Hillary voters on here for anyone with a different opinion; nothing but hatred, intolerance, and childish insults for the dumbasses who support Trump.

your beliefs.

That's where I see one of the biggest divides occurring "beliefs". People like numbers calls people that support trump dumb because they believe things, things that when presented with facts are completely false yet people continue to have their beliefs. You can have your beliefs and opinions but those can also be completely and utterly wrong and false. It happens with both political parties but with Trump he says so many wrong things it overwhelms fact vs fiction so it gets extrapolated to his voters.

Take for example immigration and trade. You can oppose NAFTA and TPP because there is no unequivocal right answer to it, it's rooted in opinions and beliefs with a sprinkle of data, especially because one hasn't happened yet. Your beliefs and opinions on it Bob2 are on the same level as someone that opposes you because there is no right answer, so opinion is fine. The opposite of this is Mexican immigrants are rapists, data driven shows this is not true and it's not an opinion it's rooted in something measure and so is not a belief or feeling it just fucking wrong.

Plenty of Mexican immigrants, both legal and illegal, are rapists. That's a fact.

This is a fantastic post.

NPR interviewed a (the?) NYT editor yesterday about media coverage of Trump, specifically about their choice of language in saying Trump "lied" about the birther narrative and his role in it. NPR interviewer pointed out that NPR does not and did not use the word "lie" but said he "falsely stated" and noted that one ascribes ill intent while the latter could simply mean it was an accidental statement/misunderstanding of the timeline of facts. NYT editor's response was that he believes it's irresponsible and borderline illiterate to not call Trump's statements on the timeline, substance, and fallout of the whole birther thing and his/Hillary's role in it as a "lie." NPR asked if he thinks the way NPR reported it was irresponsible, and he paused before saying "I think the word lie is more correct."

Yeah the key in his phrasing was coming over and immigrants, don't twist shit when you know that post was spot on and you can do it with many of his statements.

But I get the point you're making. However, we can often disagree about what constitutes a "fact". You often end up with different sets of numbers that both sides can point to. And even if you agree on the numbers, you can still have a difference of opinion on the meaning of the numbers and how they should impact public policy.

Numbers, I think it's safe to say that our country hasn't been this divided racially since the 60's. Serious question, why do you think that is? I didn't and am not placing all of the blame on the Obama administration. I'm just curious what your thoughts are.

Honestly, I'd say the internet has more to do with it than any 1 person or organization. The worst of the worst are able to communicate and spread vitriol in an endless echo chamber.
