Not sure yet, I need to read my new NC hiking book at lunch and maybe choose a place. Trying to get the friendman to pick since he's, ya know, ever backpacked before, but he's not being decisive. I'm not sure what a good number of miles in a day is going to be. 10? 15? 20? I've never carried that much stuff on my back so I don't have a good understanding of how much that'll slow/tire me compared to just hiking with a daypack. Longest hike I've ever done is ~14 miles, since trail marathons don't count as a hike.

Plan for 8 - 12 miles with a stretch goal of 14-18 if you're feeling good. Terrain and fitness will be big factors in determining daily mileage.

If all you carry is a water bottle, and don't ever hike, I'd keep it 8-10. You're in good shape right? Maybe 12

Test days are the best days.

Already finished my final grades for the first Six Weeks (we're on the SEISmester calendar) as well as my lesson plan for next week. By mid-day Thursday. That's a record. I just need to fill out some professional development BS goals sheet and then type up my sub plans for tomorrow afternoon and Monday and BAM.

23 hours and 15 minutes until freedom!

I feel like I've wanted to go on a serious day long hike for forever but just never get around to doing it.

wait really? no more in Carrboro?

Yeah, this is a federal thing. They dodged the bullet of the legislature (which probably would have just been some restrictions/regulations) but got nailed by BIG GOVERNMENT. The DEA is putting it on two years probation starting tonight at midnight -- Schedule I right up there with H and marijuana.

that sucks. I enjoyed the smack tea.

10-12 is a solid day w/ backpacking weight (since you're in shape - otherwise I'd say less).

I was hit by a car on my way in to work this morning; this is all a much smoother process when the driver actually stops and provides insurance information.
Bike is ok this time, but my butt/lower back is not pleased with the situation.

When I was "training" for the Muir trail a couple of years ago, before my buddy bailed on the trip and it was aborted, I did a few 10 milers (one on Hanging Rock, one, less stressful, around here) and it was fun and doable, though I did Hanging Rock right at the start of summer and that shit took it out of me. I also wasn't exercising regularly at the time, but if it's cool in the mountains and you have water/food, I think 10 is fine and FUN, especially if it's just one day or back-to-back days and you're not trying to string together a bunch of them. I dunno, though, I'm not really experienced.

yikes, sorry to hear

So how did you get hit? Car turn into you?

Yeah, I was going straight, they turned right.
I was almost able to ride out of it, but had lost a bit of control when I hit into her car, and then I was about to broadside the people waiting to turn left. It was a mix of bailing and falling when I went down; landed hard on my ass/tailbone. I don't even think I ever disconnected from my bike.

One of the craziest parts of this is that pizza man's ex had this happen last night, except she was the driver.

It's been a really ridiculous 24 hours.
Ultimately, I'm glad to be more or less OK. About to head to the Dr. to get checked out for sure, though.

lol 12 miles for a total n00b backpacker is going to be devastating

I guess I'll eat my words later, but spending a whole day, like I assume at least 10 hours on the trails (I dunno maybe you don't walk the whole time), and only covering 10ish miles just seems quite short. I want to be realistic though. I like the idea of 14-18 better, but I'm trying to let the experienced backpacker make the calls, so I shouldn't brush off yall who have carried beyond a daypack before. I'm in above-average shape, which sounds braggy, but is probably true. :noidea:
