General Election Thread: Two Weeks Out

I prefer to elect leaders who pay their taxes. I suspect that doesn't matter to tintin.

As long as they haven't done anything illegal I could not care less. Strikes me as a personal issue. I think we all know people want tax returns every year so they can bitch about their charitable giving (even if they give a lot) and throw shade over how much money they have. Again, very old-school church gossipy to me. I think it's a tired charade each year for both candidates and I don't see the merit.

Oh and to bitch that they don't pay more in taxes than they have to, as if that's a legitimate complaint. What dumbass would purposefully pay more taxes than they should?

Milo who? Minderbinder?
It was a joke. Milo Yiannopoulos is an alt-right British internet celebrity with a heavy following from the gaming/4chan community. Just imagine if BSF was gay, British, and much more cutting and mean.

So why don't you want to see their tax returns to make sure they haven't done anything illegal?

Still don't see why it matters, at all. Strikes me as some old-school church looking for something to gossip over shit

I thought it was to disclose who he/she does business with in their civilian lives to ensure the voting public that he/she is going to handle matters of international business in their best interest, not merely his/her own.

I trust the IRS to do their job, do you think you are more qualified than them?
Regarding Hillary, I trust the FBI to do their job, do you think you are more qualified than them? All of the Trump voters on my FB timeline are more qualified apparently.

It's not just whether it is illegal, but also whether it is immoral, as we have learned with Hillary. All of her dirty laundry is out there for the people to see, and a HUGE hoopla has been made over questionably moral, but legal actions. Perhaps Trump does have some illegal activity in his tax returns, but that's not even what I'm betting the problem is. I'm thinking it's more that his entire persona is built upon the illusion that he is extremely successful, and his tax returns would prove that he is not. I can't stress enough how important Trump's image of success is to his core followers. It's actually insane. The next level would be that he has not been paying income taxes, as he has all but confessed to. He may have found a loop hole around paying them, but it should still be up to the public for them to decide if they think that is immoral. Furthermore, it could be that he has some involvement with people/foundations/governments that he doesn't want made known.

The legality of what he is doing is up to the IRS. The morality is up to the people of the United States that he is trying to run.

Trying to determine someone's "success" from their tax returns who is not merely a W-2 employee would be like trying to determine won-loss record by looking at a team's free throw percentage. Yeah it could give some insight, but in no way is it even close to determinative.

ordinarily, i'd agree. but for a man who measures himself by wealth, i think tax return would be the one thing we could use to measure his success

Whether or not they are useful, there are three things here. First, it is expected of candidates, and has been for decades, as a symbol of being forthright, if nothing else. Second, his opponent has released hers, it looks suspicious that he hasn't. Third, it has been proven that being audited does not preclude him from releasing them, thus many of us are suspicious why he is hiding behind an invalid excuse.
