Presumably OFFICIAL 2016/17 Premier League

I wonder if Jamie Vardy can lead Leceister back from 13th place.

Too bad we stole their chief spreadsheet sorter, Steve Walsh. He probs could have identified that Gana would have been a like for like replacement for Kante and they could have stayed in their dumb system another year.

Anyone think they should use instant replay for at least possible fouls inside the box? Burnley got hosed on both ends yesterday (Gudmundson taken out in the box - no call, McQueen is mauled by his own shadow and gets the call) and maybe with someone with a better angle could get the call right.

Have 3 officials in the booth, with the majority (2/3) opinion making the ruling.
Play could continue (or even stop - give them a max of 2 minutes). It would add time to the game but frankly it would be worth it to make sure the call is correct.

Agreed. The replay related stoppages of play is ruining the NFL. Their viewership and attendance numbers are both down for that reason. More than anything it has become an excuse to squeeze in some more commercials.

And if you let play continue, as CapeCod suggested, what are you going to do? Stop play that has moved to the other penalty box and then bring it back for a missed call from a minute earlier? Do you allow for advantage or just stop the second the call comes from upstairs to wind it back? And how do you determine if slight contact is a foul or not? Does the subjective decision of the official upstairs overrule the subjective decision of the referee on the field?

Doing that would fuck up the entire flow of the game. No. No. No.

Hell I wish replay would disappear in every sport. It ruins the flow of games and encourages referees to be shittier at their job. Its turrible. This isn't life or death, it is sports. I can live with the occasional referee mistake. Would you want robo umps in baseball too?

There are lots of reasons viewership in the NFL is declining, and I sincerely doubt replay plays a major role. People who are willing to tune in to a 3 hour game are certainly gonna stick around for a 3 hour and 30 minute game.

Soccer is a free flowing game, so stoppages for things like referees conferring, goal line replays, etc. do have a material effect on how the game progresses. It's not like networks would have the option to go to commercial and hold up the entire proceedings during that time in soccer as they are in football.

Implementations of replay in baseball, tennis, and elsewhere have been very successful. It means fewer games are decided by officials and more are decided by players, and that's a good thing. We have so many cameras in stadiums these days, and the technology to quickly make the correct decisions. We can be judicious about how they're used and still improve the game quality by taking some of the human fallibility out of the equation.

Fair enough, but how would you implement it during the match?

I'm basically asking you to answer the 4 to 5 questions in my second paragraph.

Steck saved two penalties and had a handful of other impressive saves. Citeh certainly outclassed us, but we did have a few good opportunities on goal in the second half. We came close to retaking the lead once or twice right around the beginning of stoppage time.

Outside of Steck and Lukaku (his goal was great), my player of the match was Cleverley. Dude put in a solid shift as the third holding midfielder for the first 60 and then did a solid job playing underneath Lukaku and Bolasie after Gerry D exited. His excellent off balanced flick to start the counter is what set up Rom to go one on one at Clichy and score.

Well I haven't had much time to consider, but I'm guessing some circumstances would be "reviewable" and others not, as in throwball.

If the whistle is never blown, there's nothing reviewable there. If the whistle does blow for a penalty/dive, a 60-90 second clock from upstairs could give plenty of time to review, and follow the NFL standard of "indisputable evidence" from there to either stick with or reverse the official's decision.

I'm not 100% convinced this would be good policy, but as I said initially, I'm not immediately against the idea. The game moves so quickly, and referees have a very tough task on many penalty decisions, especially in a crowded box or on the break when the official's sight lines aren't perfect.

Another issue would be free kicks, especially corners. Are they going to call every foul in the box by the letter of the law? Because if so, there will be 4-5 penalties a match.

Yeah, corners are a good example of where the FA absolutely can't mirror the NFL.

You can't meddle in the league to the extent that it makes games worse, be that with outright rule changes/new rules or with targeted enforcement.

Luckily, most referees are still generally terrified to make the calls.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If it is broken, and I think there are good examples of it being broken, fix it.

If that just means hiring better officials, fine.

I'd be okay with a few smaller minor improvements (like goal line tech) but anything that involves subjective officiating has to be off limits. Instant replay is a virus that starts off small and grows into a giant mass that destroys the watchability of games. Keep it away.

I guess I would like to think that you'd rather the game be decided by objectivity than subjectivity, and replay helps you get there. It sorta depends on whether you're thinking about the integrity of the result or the viewing experience, too.

Just look at the Xhaka tackle from this past weekend. Both sides of the argument have valid points. It was a classic "orange" situation. How would instant replay help there? I would argue it wouldn't and would just take time away from actual action on the pitch.

Fine, but there are also examples of clear cut bad officiating that could have been helped by replay. It's not a solution to every call on the field, that's for sure.

Tonight is the first #LIVMUN game that Ryan Giggs has not featured in as a player or coach since February 1991
