We need a little Northwestern game noise

Watched the entire game and kept thinking to myself, "The ceiling for both of these teams is the NIT." Maybe NW just had an off night and turns into a decent team in the B1G, or maybe they are who they are and end up with a 2-3 seed in the NIT.

As for Wake, if this is what ACC road games are going to be like, we're in for another long season. NW just established a blueprint for consistently turning us over. The good news is, there's not much to get our hopes up before ACC play, unlike last year.

There was no blueprint for consistently turning us over. Crawford can either decide to be smart with the ball or not. It's that simple. His horrible entry passes to Collins, the completely stupid lob for an alleyoop to Collins who clearly wasn't thinking of that, charges. There is nothing that is not correctable if he plays smarter. You're just not going to win a game when your PG has 9 TO's. Period. FT shooting was very good last night and kept us in it.

Let's say Crawford has 2 TO's. As a team, we have 12 TO's, two more than Northwestern. That is a completely different ball game.

The fact that none of the other freshman (besides Childress) can see a single minute in a horribly played game like that is very disheartening.

Where to start? Most glaring example of ineptitude and selfishness tonight was Crawford, 9 turnovers, seriously? If he played a lick of defense or shot the ball welll you could make an argument for him staying out there, but he did not. Why McClinton plays is a greater mystery than the great pyramid and the amount of minutes awarded to Mitch is close behind. Moore looks like his mind is running at 5mph while trying to run catch a bus doing 10, keep him on the bench and try Sam for a while. Don't know what has happened to Dinos shot but it appears to have deserted him so far and we need it. Brandon shot awful and took bad shots tonight but did only have the 1 turnover, plus he is still a freshman so I will cut him a little slack.

Mannings coaching is, let's just say subpar to be kind, especially in tight games. I haven't given up on this team because there is talent, but they have got to be coached better and play as a team both offensively and defensively to avoid another stellar ACC season like last year. Please, please please Danny, quit the hedging with bigs who are not quick enough to recover and get back into position to, you know, actually guard the rim. I would like to see him go to a box and one or a triangle and two when a player like McInfish is hitting shots and basically their entire offense. Don't mistake that I want Manning replaced because I don't, as least as long as Ron Wellman is in charge of the hiring process because another bad hire and we are done for another decade at least

First of all, Bryant had his worst game of the season last night. i am not disputing that., but the red section is a PERFECT example of how little people understand the game and get into group think. Bryant was covering Scottie Lindsey most of the game last night. Coming into last night's game:

Lindsey was averaging 15.6 ppg. He got 12.
He was 33-67 from the field - he shot 5-14
He was 13-27 from 3. Last night he was 2-8
He was averaging getting 2.5 FT/game. He got zero.

By each of those significant metrics, Bryant did a very good job on defense. To say he didn't "play a lick of defense" couldn't be more wrong.

Bryant played a terrible game on offense, but his defense was rock solid.

He wasn't covering McIntosh. That assignment went to Brandon and Mitch.

While I am clearly a champion of stats, I don't know how you could watch that game and think that Crawford did a "rock solid" job on defense.

He was awful. He got bailed out several times on missed open threes by Northwestern because he either: failed to keep his guy in front of him, failed to rotate to help, or both of those things on the same possession.

He mostly hurt us when he caused other guys to have to come over and help defend his man because he got beat, causing the "help the helpers" to be late and leave guys open.

You weren't watching very closely on defense, then.

I think Manning played Mcclinton more than usual tonight because Arians wasn't hitting shots and he's not a good defender. Mcclinton also played because obviously Doral was in the dog-house and we were forced to play Dinos at the 5 for a decent amount of minutes today. I would like an explanation why Doral didn't play much at all today. He's done that with him for two games. What good is a having a guy on the team if he is only going to be used against certain teams with certain personnel? Seems stupid to me.

This x1000. It makes no sense to bench the guy for the remainder of the game because he missed one rotation on D. While he lets Crawford play through his ten turnovers. The same thing happened in the Nova game where he was presumably benched due to the flow of the game. However, Nova was scoring on over 75% of their possessions and Manning shouldve at least gone to Moore in the 2nd half because we had nothing to lose. Just having him in there allows our players to close out more aggresively and funnel players to our only true rim protector. Obviously, we were losing to Nova either way, but you cant help but wonder what difference it wouldve made last night. There's going to be a ton of games this year where teams play small and at a fast pace against us, and we cant simply keep Doral on the bench in all of these situations. You can argue about what personnel gave us the best chance to win last night but this is a fact: Northwester was thrilled to see Moore on the bench all half. They didnt have anyone who could match up with him physically and we made their lives a whole lot easier by playing GMC instead of Moore.

Well in theory if we both played "terrible" games to the same extent then they would have won by 5 points or so according to Vegas and KP. Obviously it's difficult to determine similar levels of sucktitude.

My primary concern is the defense. We are consistently beat on simple high ball screens with Crawford on the PG as the primary defender because we don't have the lateral quickness to help out. Our rotations are usually late inside by a step or two, and that leads to either an open layup, or an easy kick to the corner for an open three. I just have no idea what Crawford is thinking on defense. He floats around all the time and is hardly ever around his man. The team is constantly rotating to try to help him out and that gets folks out of position.

I would love to have Coach Manning (or anybody on the staff) just sit down with him, watch that game, and stop it every time he commits a turnover, or "floats" on defense, or gets blown by on a screen by Bryant McIntosh. I legitimately don't understand how it keeps happening.

On the offensive side we either turned the ball over through Bryant, shot a long, contested two, or fed Collins (usually to good results). For some reason when he came back in after the cramp we stopped going to him.

I'm frustrated about last night primarily because NU had a bad night overall and we couldn't capitalize on it. It's unfortunate that we had a really bad night at the same time they did. It was our first close game of the season and we failed the test from the four minute mark in. Hopefully we learn from it. How we bounce back on Saturday at Richmond will say a lot.

We played terribly on offense. It was unquestionably our worst game. Bryant turned it over too often. Bizarrely in 39 minutes, neither Mitch nor Brandon had a single assist when we had two guys posting up and getting whatever shot they wanted.

Other than Brandon and Mitch getting abused by McIntosh our D was actually good. We held the #8 3 pt shooting team to 23.1% and overall to 40.9% (were shooting about 50% for the season) and held them to 65 at home vs. their 80 ppg season average.

Without McIntosh (who was shooting 34.9/21 for the season), the rest of NW shot 34% from the field and 4-18 from three.

Yes, we played terribly. Yes, we have to do something with the Mitch/Brandon position. But, the Suicide Squad is misplaced.

Has everyone chilled out?

We will be fine

He was our best perimeter defender last night. It wasn't close. The rest of his game sucked, but our D was destroyed by those not covering McIntosh.

I'm good! Was upset for about 5 minutes last night, then I farted. Better than the [Redacted] years but still a long way to go. We'll get there.

I'd like to see Wash play 10 mpg against the weaker OOC opponents to see if he might be able to play in ACC games.

Keyshawn is about an average defender. Bryant is above average. Mitch, Brandon and Austin are all bad defenders. Maybe Wash can help. He doesn't have to be a star, just give us a few solid minutes.

Besides being small., Brandon's problem seems to be not having great balance on D. He really leans a lot. That can be worked on.

If we look decent against our next two opponents who we should beat, but are dangerous, I'll feel better.

Fine if you are happy with another losing season and hoping NIT bubble in year 4.

All good, quit overreacting. It was just one game that fit a pattern like a glove.

13 out of 15 in the ACC. Whoo-hoo, Yay.

Down 3 with 30 seconds left and we forget to foul on the inbounds pass and give up a layup..COMING OUT OF A GOD DAMN TIMEOUT!

Just unbelievable.

That's on the players not the coaches. If you don't think the coaches said something like, "Go for the quick steal. If not, foul immediately", then there's not much to discuss.

Not happy, but I can see the improvement from any Bz or Manning year preceding this season. There's a reason dook never plays true road games in November.... they're tough.

The real test will be whether we can keep getting better.
