Stay John Collins!

This doesn't seem like that easy a decision. If Collins comes back, extends his game, has a big year with all of the hype that comes with it. He will be a top 5 pick. Seems that there is more money in that. What was Justin Jacksons decision like last year?

There wasn't much decision to make.

Saw an interesting stat this morning. 50% of players drafted between picks 20 and 30 are out of the league within 3 years. Again, the money in the NBA is in sticking beyond your rookie deal. You do whatever best prepares you for that.

Boeheim said most college coaches believe that if a player is not bound for the NBA lottery, he should return to school if he's capable of reaching that coveted and lucrative spot [the lottery] in the draft.

"I know he can be," Boeheim said, "and that's what I told him. I think that's a better way to go to the NBA and make more money. They draft you high, they play you. Half the picks between 20 and 30 are out of the league within three years. But again, it comes down to what he thinks, what he wants to do. I'm just grateful he's given us the two years he's given us. He's been a huge part of our team."

The money ain't bad in years 1 and 2, either.

i'd be shocked if that stat is anywhere close to correct. 50% of late first round picks aren't out of the league within 3 years, that's preposterous. boeheim is just being an ass about one of his players going pro.

Even if only half of players drafted in 20s get a 2nd NBA contract (not sure if correct), I seriously doubt that number is going to increase for that level of player by playing another year of horrible college basketball.

The assertion that Tyler Lydon has a better chance of getting a 2nd NBA contract playing for Syracuse next year rather than the NBA is crazy to me. If John Collins comes back to school he will be practicing more post moves and low block scoring that will help WF win games but is largely irrelevant in the modern NBA.

Ha, Boeheim is such a twat.

This is true for the 2013 draft. Only one player taken 20-32 is no longer in the NBA and one has never played in the NBA. But that's a strong bottom of the 1st round with a few starters like Gobert and Roberson.

5 players taken 20-32 in the 2014 draft are no longer in the NBA. That doesn't include one player who has never played in the NBA or a few players on assignment to the D-League who have barely been in the NBA this season. That's not even 3 full seasons.

Good gosh man, you don't know this. As if Collins wouldn't go through the NBA draft process and they tell him, you either need to get significantly bigger for the block and/or you need to develop an outside shot. He comes back, Manning and Collins discuss the feedback, and then they say, "yeah, let's work on that." There is no reason he can't do both in college.

As for the idea of "that level of player," the idea is that "player" raises his "level." So he's not the same level player he was the year before, which is why he gets drafted higher.

Manning himself has discussed the importance of being physically and mentally prepared for a career in the NBA. Collins has a lot to weigh. I just think there is way, way too much overconfidence on this thread that going immediately is the clear answer.

it just feels like boeheim wasn't referencing a real stat, just pulling something out of his ass because he's pissed lydon is leaving. i googled looking for something he might be citing and can't find anything.

my gut feeling on it is maybe only 50% of 20-30 develop into role players or better, but even if another 25% are just bench sitters in their 2nd contract (there are 15 roster spots) and 25% don't get a second contract that stat is still wildly incorrect.

i remember him going on a similar rant when tyler ennis went pro.

I agree that Boeheim is an ass. But he probably receives data on this stuff, you know, because it's his job and he's at the highest level of college hoops dealing with the issue all the time. But go ahead and make up your own stat.

Woj says Texas A&M's 6'9" PF/C Robert Williams strongly considering returning to school. Draftexpress has him as the #10 pick.

what? when tyler ennis declared he said something like "you're nothing if you're drafted 15th, half of the 1st round picks won't be in the league in 3 years" so i guess this wasn't that crazy but he's just a bitter POS that's just bullshitting. there's no reason to take the 50% number at face value as he's not an impartial person, he's trying to bully his players into not going pro.

I'm pretty sure it is close to 50% of late 1st round early 2nd round picks are out of the league in 3 years. Boeheim is still an ass though.

someone please link something that says that if you think that you read that somewhere.

And Tyler Ennis is pretty damn close to being out of the league.
