2017 College Basketball Coaching Carousel (Matta out at Ohio State)

Ernie Nestor retired from his job as assistant coach at Navy. He coached for 41 seasons. He was assistant coach at Wake twice, under Tacy and again under Odom.

I remember Ernie.
41 years is a long time to coach.
Hope he enjoys retirement.

Anyone else notice that Woodberry added a bunch of Oral Roberts follows today? Are we going to have more staff turnover than we thought?

I don't remember a Division 1 coach from a State (or a Tech) going to the U before. NMSU fans must be pissed, but they'll be fine. They've got a nice run going. Six NCAAs in the last 8 years.

Well that's interesting. He certainly would make sense as a hire.

That is an interesting development. If both the #2 and #3 spots are (or become) open, does that change Danny's thinking about the strengths of the guys he hires?

Probably. Could change what happens with Bauman as well.

Lose the #2 & 3 guys then you can go for a more experienced coach to provide guidance/gameplanning as the #2 (or whatever title you want), while getting the recruiting specialist with some scouting duties that people wanted for the #3 spot.

Agree, Bauman's promotion (if it's otherwise under consideration) would likely be dependant on hiring a well experienced assistant. No way there's two new assistants with limited experience.

There is also the possibility that Woodberry could take Bauman with him as an assistant.

Yeah. That's what I was referring to.

Regardless of what happens, this is the most football and basketball staff turnover we've seen in one season since 2001.

I take it the year we hired Manning, with a mostly new staff (except for Chill) and hired Clawson with an almost complete new staff as well (one or two holdovers, I think) doesn't count. Are you referring to situations in which the HC stays, but assistants move along?

Forgot we did double hires that year too. I was going to exclude the new head coaches, but we haven't had anything close to this much assistant turnover that I remember.

Little premature on the massive turnover assessment.

Understand the twitter connection, but seems like a leap to conclude that Woodbury will get the ORU job; then another that Bauman is going to join Woodbury on this imaginary ORU offer.

Yes, in BB it is just one so far. However, football had a lot of turnover for a non-head coach replacement year. I suspect that might put a hitch in things in FB as the new coaches get used to Clawson, each other and their new recruiting territories.

Not sure what you mean by premature, Pilchard. This has been a very active season. Two coordinators and two assistants in football and one assistant in basketball is high turnover regardless of either Woodberry and/or Bauman leaves. I'm not sure where you're going with this.
