Wake Baseball 2017-Regional Champs! On to Supers!

The narrative that Wake sports in general aren't clutch comes from the fact that our teams outperform their seed in the postsason at a much lower rate than they underperform their seed across all sports.

Dumb.

ACC teams have won all of two national championships in 57 years. It's especially difficult to do in college baseball. Doesn't mean we're not clutch. Good gracious.

FSU baseball must be the least clutch team of all time. IIRC, the Noles are 0-23 at the CWS. Clemson is 0-12. UNC is 0-10. Those three schools are a collective 0-45. What a bunch of chokers!

We were ranked ~16 and (barely) hosted a regional. Compared to the teams that advanced to Omaha, we probably had above average offense, but below average pitching.

It's not like we led in either of the losses to Florida.

FSU outperformed their seed in this baseball postseason.

I don't know why fans get so miffed when people point out facts. The facts are that Wake (across all sports) is usually the 2 seed that loses in the 2nd round and is rarely the 7 seed that makes the sweet 16 or final 8.

Does somebody not want to dispute that Wake athletic teams underperform their seed in postseason tournaments overall at a multiple of at least 2 or 3 compared to the inverse ( and I think I am being generous here) across all sports over a 20 to 30 year period?

it can be simultaneously true that our basketball and men's golf teams (among others, but those are the most egregious examples) have underachieved in the postseason far more often than not, and that this year's baseball team simply ran into a slightly better team on their home field

FSU, having played UF for two straight postseasons, got a lucky break by drawing a seed that did not get out of its own regional, therefore giving FSU the opportunity to host a lesser team in the supers

the last time FSU was a top 8 seed, they flamed out of the regional, going 0-2 and letting Kennesaw State advance, which then unexpectedly allowed Louisville to host the super and advance

hopefully WF baseball can get to enough NCAA tournaments to get a lucky break or two like that and capitalize every once in a while

I would say that the one team during my wake fandom that has actually exceeded postseason expectations at a much higher rate than the inverse would be football. We have won quite a few bowl games as an underdog and the losses have mostly been as an underdog.

Think fans of most teams don't get that in the end there's only one winner and a million losers. So, whenever their team loses in the post-season, they think that their team under-performed/disappointed/got screwed/was poorly coached/failed to give a 100% add in another 100 clichés.

Even Bama football fans groused about their defense and the coaching staff after losing as a favorite to Clemson, and KY basketball fans always complain when their teams doesn't win it all. Sports fans are whiners. Rarely do they appreciate the quality of play or having a good season when it inevitably ends with a loss.

Logically, I agree with this. Emotionally, I am certain WFU sports is cursed and under-performs wildly.

It isn't brain surgery to tell whether your team over or under performed. National posteason tournaments are seeded.

Sad. I don't think anybody is going to beat Oregon State, but we had just as good of a shot to be in that championship series against them as anybody.

Looks like it's probably gonna be Florida v. Oregon State. Should be an interesting series.

Would be indeed. Complete team that crushed all comers vs. a filthy AF pitching staff. I'd check that out

Are we going to hang-on to Tom Walter? Will RW step-up to the plate (haha) if someone comes calling with big coin?

If Walter goes then I assume we hire Hobbs (the pitching coach, who is highly regarded).
