Prop plane? OUT.

i'm no aero engineer but something tells me the nature of a jet-intake is the problem. fortunately someone else wondered about this:

Ask the Captain: Why are hurricane hunters propeller-driven?

Question: Why are the hurricane hunter planes only twin turboprops and not the regular fan jets that passenger planes use?

— Submitted by reader Edward Zell, Ohio

Answer: The turboprops are more tolerant of hail than the jets. Airplanes that penetrate thunderstorms have an increased chance of encountering hail. Additionally, the two types of airplanes used, the P-3 and the C-130, are especially rugged.

Good question!

Makes sense. If a goose can take out a passenger jet engine, then a bunch of golf ball (or softball) size balls of ice probably could too. Won't make me feel too good the next time I'm on a plane trying to land in a thunderstorm, though.

Is 2017 shaping up to be the worst year for hurricanes in modern US history?

Is 2017 shaping up to be the worst year for hurricanes in modern US history?

2005. Four Hurricanes hit Florida alone that year, including Katrina, which passed over the state and into the Gulf before heading to New Orleans. And the state was already battered after being hit by four hurricanes the year before.

Of note for the 11 am update from NOAA, which didn't really change for the 2 pm update, NOAA admitted that at this point it isn't really sure what the eye of the storm is going to do. The model showing the eye moving to the east "is our best guess" (their actual words) as at this point, they don't know what the cold front from up north is going to do to Irma. If its a strong front that pushes far south, Irma will turn more to the east. However, if it is a weak front or doesn't push far enough south, Irma can still go up the west coast or through the middle of the state. If you look at the "5 day" cone of the 11 am and 2 pm updates, it is much larger than it was previously. This is to illustrate NOAA's lack of clear data at this point.

Usually, the 5 am update is a very good picture of what the storm is doing because that update includes data collected from the Hurricane Hunter plane. It is the update with the best data showing what the storm is actually doing.
