SportsCenter with Michael and Jemele SC6

She said to boycott ESPN's advertisers. She said to boycott her company's revenue stream. You can't spin this

Funny, I said to boycott MSESPN long ago because of their political stance--making Bruce/Caitlin Jenner the Arthur Ashe Most Courageous Athlete over Lauren Hill in 2015--what a joke! Then there was CP3 & Lebron et al leading off on last year's ESPY's with their talk.. MSESPN & Politics has gotten out of hand. Just do sports!

Why is supporting American symbols over American people considered patriotic?

That is where it gets confusing - to many people the symbols symbolize American people - so by supporting the symbols you ARE supporting American people. And don't assume which side I am on here - 'cause I'm not really sure myself. I'm a big supporter of the right to protest and get that protesters should get to choose when, where and how they protest. I also happen to think these particular protesters would do their cause more good by protesting at other times or in other ways. If Kaepernick wanted to start a conversation, he did so - now move on to improving communications and working to address the issues. It has long ago stopped being about the things they are protesting and started being about the protest itself.

As a way to change the conversation from police brutality and injustice to the flag and anthem.

One thing that the protesters may not realize is the historical backdrop of protesting against the flag and what memories antiflag protests bring up in OWG's (like many NFL owners). None of the NFL players doing the protesting were alive for those activities. Maybe they heard about them from parents or grandparents but that is not the same as living through them.

Many of the protests in the 1960's and 70's involved actions that denigrated the American flag, to protest policies of the federal government and the American military and it's actions in Viet Nam. If you have memories of those protests, and see disrespect for the flag, it is pretty easy to bring the memories into the present situation.

Particularly when there isn't a well stated goal that the protester want reached. What, specifically, do the protesting players want to happen? Specifically, what actions should the NFL audiences, both in stadium and TV, need to do for the protesting players to say that the protest has been successful?

maybe the NFL should revert its policy of having teams come out for the anthems so no one has to worry about it. looks like it happened in 2009 -- was this some kind of backlash at Obama to appease the heartland rubes?

They want liberty and justice for all. If that's not a well-stated goal, take it up with the pledge of allegiance.

Stop killing black people and electing incompetent racists. For starters.

Also is this post doubling down and defending the Vietnam War AND police brutality?

When will any of the players/people of influence (Obama, Rev. Jackson, Al Sharpton) address the issue of the hundreds of innocent African-Americans murdered in Chicago each year and the 17 million African-American babies murdered in abortion clinics since 1973?

Make it optional. Players who want to stand with the fans are welcome, those who don't stay in the locker room. Of course, then you will have some saying they want to stand and will kneel once they get out there.

Amazingly all three of them have addressed violence in Chicago and police brutality numerous times.

Like what

Well, the national anthem before an NFL game lasts like 2 or 3 minutes once a week, seems like there is plenty of time for them to protest in a million other ways. Call a press conference every week. Discuss your concerns during your pre- or post-game interview. Whatever.

Which means their protest is not being effective because their message has been lost. That would tell me they should change their methods to something that is more focused on their issues.

Would you give a shit if some NFL player held a press conference every week to complain about denial of civil rights for minorities ? That’s why this protest is working. It bothers you and at least makes you consider why they’re protesting.
