WFU Hoops: '23-'24 Roster Construction Thread: +Miller, Sallis, Reid, & Canka

I also don’t see it with Marsh unfortunately. Not yet at least. He’s a pretty weak rebounder for his size. Not a good post defender. Zero offense to speak of other than Ty throwing lobs which teams started to mitigate. I’m hopeful because he’s certainly got the size we need but there’s just no evidence at this point.

I could see a scenario in which Marsh continues to improve and is the primary 5 for this season.
I could see a scenario in which Keller passes Marsh on the depth chart because he fits the mold of stretch 5 better than Marsh (and can perhaps play better defense).
I could see a scenario where we bring in a 5 via the transfer portal who ends up at the primary 5.

I don't think we'll have the answer on the 5 until early in the fall (even if we bring someone in), or maybe even until after the team has played a few games.

There are over 3,000 D1 college basketball players. Matthew Marsh was #1 in the nation in 2 PT FG% and in O rating. To claim he didn't improve last season is asinine.

He's 7-1 250, can run and can jump. Yes, his basketball instincts are lacking, and his defense was poor, but this isn't Davion Bradford, Marsh has skills that the staff can work with. You can hate on Marsh all day long, but he will play a role in 2024.

marsh is a guy that just needs to play a ton of hoops and get a better feel for the game

hope he's just summer league-ing it all summer against 30 year-olds playing in Europe home for the summer

If Marsh develops the ability to score from even like 6' away, then he's probably a 10ppg guy next year assuming decent PG play.
Yeah, as I've said, you can be a solid big man in college with just a big drop step to the basket (like Big E), but if you want to be dominant you need at least one move to the middle of the court within 6 or 7 feet.

I believe in Marsh and Keller. Worst case they give us 10 fouls a game. 15 if Carr slides over to the 5. Another big from the portal would go a long way but I’m not too worried about the roster (as long as today comes to fruition)

marsh is fine offensively, wish he was a bit better on the offensive glass but we don't need to be feeding him the ball in the post. the issue is he's pretty invisible on defense. it's remarkable that he only had six blocks all season.

i also agree that carr at the 5 isn't a horrible option if we end up with good wing talent.

He only shot dunks lol. Didn't even attempt enough FGs for it to count on the record books as a FG%. I actually think he has a good feel for the game and I think that's a stereotype of foreign players that isn't true in this case. He just doesn't have the ability to stay in front of his man on defense and doesn't have any offensive game outside of an excellent understanding of P&R offense.

I don’t think anyone is “hating on” Marsh but I’m trying to be realistic about where he is today. Using the FG% stat as proof of his development is wildly misleading. We all know those were largely unopposed alley oops and on the very rare occasions when he attempted to initiate scoring on his own he looked nowhere close to being effective.

Him only having 6 blocks really is incredible. That is so so bad, he's got to get that D up. But he has the potential to be a solid player.

i like getting unopposed alley oops

The Burns/NC State game is really about all the proof you need that we require a lot of help at the 5. Whether that’s player development or adding a guy from the portal or both there’s a big need.

Carr is fine situationally at the 5 depending on the matchup and allows us to get a lot of offense on the floor. I expect him to have a really strong season.

Because the roster changed and he needed to. If Walton and Sy were still here he wouldn't have again. It was a glaring position of weakness and we had nobody else to run out there.
The other way to look at it is that Forbes got Walton and Sy to play instead of freshman Marsh. He DID NOT get Walton 2.0 and Sy 2.0 to play instead of sophomore Marsh. What Wake does need is another quality big body to rotatate with Marsh. Marsh isn't playing 40 minutes. Basketball is still a game in which being tall is an advantage.
